An offer letter from a church can split the pay into two lines: a salary, and a second figure labeled "designated housing allowance." The church administrator down the hall won't see that line on their offer. For a first-time pastor, that second line raises tax questions, and the answers change how much of the offer you keep.

**A housing allowance for pastors is the part of a minister's pay the church designates in advance for housing. Under IRS Publication 517, it is free of federal income tax up to the lowest of the designated amount, housing costs, and fair rental value plus utilities, but still subject to self-employment tax.**

## Key takeaways

| **Housing allowance rule** | **How it plays out on your return** |
| --- | --- |
| Who qualifies | Ordained, commissioned, or licensed ministers paid for ministerial services |
| Designation | The church must set a definite amount in writing before it pays the allowance |
| Income tax cap | You exclude the smallest of the designated amount, your housing costs, and fair rental value plus utilities |
| Self-employment tax | The full allowance (or a parsonage's rental value) still counts toward the 15.3% SE tax |
| Parsonage option | A church-owned home is also excluded from income tax, but you build no equity |
| Retirement | Retired ministers can exclude pension amounts designated as housing allowance |

## Who qualifies for a minister's housing allowance?

The housing exclusion in Section 107 of the Internal Revenue Code belongs to "ministers of the gospel," and [IRS Publication 517 (2025)](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p517), the edition used for 2025 returns, defines them as people "duly ordained, commissioned, or licensed by a religious body constituting a church or church denomination." The person must also be paid for ministerial services, such as leading worship, administering the sacraments, and running the church's religious work.

Several groups fall inside or outside that line in ways that surprise people:

- A minister who teaches or serves as an administrator at a church school, college, or university qualifies, so ordained staff in [Christian school and education jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-education-jobs) may be eligible.
- A minister teaching at a nonchurch college does not qualify for a housing allowance from that college.
- A minister of music or minister of education who is not authorized to perform substantially all the religious duties of an ordained minister in that church does not qualify, even with a commissioning certificate.
- A seminary student serving a required internship as a part-time or assistant pastor qualifies only if [already ordained, commissioned, or licensed](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/how-to-become-a-pastor).

Lay staff such as a church administrator or bookkeeper cannot receive a tax-free housing allowance, no matter what the church calls the payment. If a posting offers one for a non-ministerial role, ask the church how it classifies the position before you count on the tax break.

## How does a church designate the housing allowance?

Every housing allowance for pastors starts with paperwork. The church or organization that pays you must "officially designate the payment as a housing allowance before it makes the payment," according to Publication 517. It has to be a definite dollar amount, and the church cannot go back at year end and relabel salary it already paid. If no designation exists, your whole salary is taxable income.

An official designation can appear in any of these places:

- An employment contract or offer letter
- The minutes of a church board or congregational meeting
- The annual budget
- Any other official action taken before the allowance is paid

Informal conversations don't count. If you work for a local congregation, a resolution by your national denomination does not designate the allowance for you; the local church has to do it. Ministers employed directly by a national agency can be covered by that agency's resolution.

Ask the board to pass the resolution before January 1 for the coming year, with language that keeps it in effect until a new resolution replaces it. A church can also raise or lower the amount mid-year, but the change only applies to pay going forward. If you handle payroll in a church office or are looking at [church finance and bookkeeping jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-finance-jobs), the designation resolution is one of the documents worth keeping in the personnel file. Churches may report the allowance in box 14 of the minister's Form W-2, though Publication 517 does not require it.

## What housing expenses count toward the allowance?

Housing expenses are the costs of providing and running the home you live in. Common qualifying costs, drawn from the housing allowance guide from [Church Law & Tax](https://www.churchlawandtax.com/understand-taxes/clergy/a-ministers-most-important-tax-break/), include:

- Rent, or mortgage principal and interest
- Property taxes and homeowners or renters insurance
- Utilities: electricity, gas, water, and trash
- Furniture and appliances
- Repairs and maintenance

A second home or a vacation property doesn't count, since the exclusion covers the home you live in.

Keep receipts all year, because your December 31 spending total becomes the second of the three limits below.

## How is the tax-free amount of a housing allowance capped?

A minister who owns or rents a home can exclude from gross income the smallest of three numbers, per Publication 517:

1. The amount the church officially designated as housing allowance
2. The amount you spent to provide a home during the year
3. The fair rental value of the home, including furnishings, utilities, and garage

Publication 517 adds a fourth ceiling: the exclusion can't exceed reasonable pay for your services. Fair rental value is what a comparable furnished home in a similar location would rent for between unrelated parties, so check rental listings or ask a local real estate agent and save what you find.

Here is a hypothetical example of how the lowest-of-three test works for a pastor who owns a home:

| **Limit** | **Amount** |
| --- | --- |
| Designated by the church board | $24,000 |
| Spent on mortgage, utilities, insurance, repairs, and furnishings | $21,500 |
| Fair rental value, furnished, plus utilities | $22,800 |
| Excluded from income tax | $21,500 |

The $2,500 left over is an "excess allowance." Publication 517 tells you to add it to income on Form 1040, line 1h, with "Excess allowance" written next to the line. Ministers who own their homes can still deduct mortgage interest and property taxes on Schedule A, even when the allowance paid for them.

The fair rental value cap dates to the Clergy Housing Allowance Clarification Act of 2002, which Congress passed after a court case questioned whether the fair rental value limit applied. A later challenge, *Gaylor v. Mnuchin*, argued the allowance was unconstitutional; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit upheld it in March 2019, and the [Section 107 text](https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/26/107) still includes the fair rental value limit.

## Why do pastors still pay self-employment tax on housing?

Ministers have dual tax status. A pastor is usually a common-law employee of the church for income tax purposes, yet Publication 517 says earnings for ministerial services "are subject to SE tax, even if you perform these services as an employee of that church." The church does not withhold or match Social Security and Medicare (FICA) taxes on that pay. You pay both halves yourself through self-employment tax on Schedule SE.

The housing allowance escapes income tax only. For self-employment tax, you add back the full designated allowance or the fair rental value of a parsonage, plus utilities the church pays. Publication 517 (2025) puts the combined rate at 15.3%, applied to 92.35% of net earnings.

Taking the $21,500 from the example above, self-employment tax on the housing portion alone comes to about $3,038 ($21,500 times 0.9235 times 0.153), even though that $21,500 never shows up as taxable income.

Because the church doesn't withhold income tax from a minister's salary by default, plan for the self-employment tax bill in one of two ways:

- Make quarterly estimated tax payments with Form 1040-ES. Publication 517 says you generally must if you expect to owe $1,000 or more.
- Sign a voluntary withholding agreement with the church so extra federal income tax comes out of each paycheck to cover both income and SE tax.

Some ministers opt out with [Form 4361](https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-4361). The exemption requires conscientious or denominational religious opposition to public insurance, can't be claimed for economic reasons, must be filed by the tax return due date for the second year with $400 or more in ministry earnings, and is irrevocable once approved. A minister who opts out gives up Social Security credit for ministry earnings.

## Parsonage or housing allowance: which one fits your family?

A parsonage is a church-owned home the minister lives in rent-free, and its fair rental value is excluded from income tax the same way a cash allowance is. [Some churches offer a parsonage](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/christian-jobs-with-housing) plus a smaller allowance for utilities and furnishings. Publication 517 lets you exclude a designated utility allowance up to what you spend, and any unspent part becomes taxable.

| **Factor** | **Church-provided parsonage** | **Cash housing allowance** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Who owns the home | The church | You (or your landlord) |
| Income tax | Fair rental value excluded | Lowest of the three limits excluded |
| Self-employment tax | Fair rental value plus church-paid utilities included | Full allowance included |
| Home equity | None | Builds if you buy |
| Where you live | Next to or near the church, chosen by the church | Your choice, within the budget |
| Retirement housing | You need a plan to buy or rent later | You may own a home by retirement |

A parsonage can make a lower salary workable, especially in an expensive area or at a small church that already owns a house. The tradeoff comes later, since a pastor who lives in parsonages for 30 years may reach retirement with no home and no equity. If you take a parsonage, ask the church whether it will also contribute to a housing equity fund or your retirement plan to offset that gap.

## What happens to the housing allowance in retirement?

Retired ministers keep a version of the exclusion. Publication 517 lets a retired minister exclude the rental value of a home the church provides as pay for past services, or the part of a pension the plan designated as a rental allowance. Retirement housing allowance amounts are also left out of self-employment tax.

Denominational retirement plans such as GuideStone and Wespath offer housing allowance designations on retirement income, so ask your plan administrator how it handles them before you start withdrawals. The same lowest-of-three limits apply. A surviving spouse cannot exclude the rental value unless it relates to ministerial services the spouse performed.

## How should you weigh the housing allowance in a pastor job offer?

A housing allowance for pastors moves money from taxable salary to tax-free pay, so [the same total package](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/pastor-salary-guide) can leave you with more take-home pay than an identical lay salary. It does not add money to the budget, and it doesn't cut self-employment tax.

[Ministry pay in our salary data](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/ministry-salary-guide) gives a sense of the total being split. According to ChristianJobsList.com salary data (as of October 2026), the 92 ministry listings from the past year with both ends of a pay range posted had a median near $51k, and the middle half ran $42k to $63k. Our data reflects the posted range and does not show how each church would split that pay between salary and housing allowance. Pay for church staff outside the pulpit, from administrators to worship leaders, is broken out by category in our [salary figures for Christian employers](https://www.christianjobslist.com/salaries).

Before you accept, work through these steps:

1. Ask whether the total compensation figure includes the housing allowance, or whether the allowance is on top of it.
2. Request the designated amount in writing, along with the date the board will pass the resolution.
3. Estimate your housing costs for the year and the home's fair rental value, then ask the church to designate at least the smaller of the two, with a cushion for repairs, so you don't leave part of the exclusion unused.
4. Set aside roughly 14% of salary plus housing for self-employment tax (15.3% on 92.35% of earnings), on top of income tax, or ask about a voluntary withholding agreement.
5. If a parsonage is offered, ask about utilities, furnishings, repairs, and any housing equity contribution.

Clergy tax rules have enough wrinkles (dual status, state tax treatment, a home office, the excess allowance) that a tax professional who works with ministers is worth paying for in your first year. This article explains how the rules work and is not tax advice.

## Frequently asked questions

### What are the IRS rules for ministers' housing allowance?

The IRS allows an ordained, commissioned, or licensed minister to exclude a housing allowance from federal income tax if the church designates a definite amount in advance and the minister uses it to provide a home. The exclusion is limited to the smallest of the designated amount, housing costs, and fair rental value plus utilities, per Publication 517.

### What is the maximum housing allowance?

No fixed dollar maximum exists for a minister's housing allowance. The church can designate any reasonable amount, but the tax-free portion stops at the lowest of the designated amount, what you spend to provide a home, and the home's fair rental value including furnishings and utilities. Anything above that limit is an excess allowance reported as taxable income.

### Do I have to pay taxes on my housing allowance?

A minister's housing allowance is free of federal income tax up to the IRS limits, but it is not free of self-employment tax. Unless the IRS has approved your Form 4361 exemption, the full designated allowance or a parsonage's fair rental value counts toward Social Security and Medicare taxes on Schedule SE at a combined 15.3% rate.

### Is a pastor's income taxable?

A pastor's salary is taxable income, along with fees for weddings, funerals, and baptisms. The designated housing allowance or parsonage value within the IRS limits is excluded from income tax. Churches don't withhold income tax from ministers by default, so pastors usually make quarterly estimated payments or sign a voluntary withholding agreement.

### Can a pastor write off a car?

A pastor paid as a church employee can no longer deduct unreimbursed work car expenses, because miscellaneous itemized deductions ended after 2017, as Publication 517 notes. Car costs from self-employed work such as weddings remain deductible on Schedule C. An accountable reimbursement plan that repays mileage tax free is usually the better route for church-paid driving.

## Ask for the board resolution before your first paycheck

The designation has to exist before the money moves, whatever month you start. When you accept a pastoral call, send the church treasurer your estimated housing costs and the home's fair rental value, and ask for a copy of the signed resolution before the first paycheck is issued.

Housing allowance for pastors: IRS rules, limits, and SE tax

The farewell reception is over, the moving truck has pulled away, and a handful of elders are sitting in the fellowship hall with a legal pad and no plan. Somebody has to preach on Sunday and answer the congregation's questions. And somebody has to work out how a church that hasn't run a search in years finds the person who will lead it next.

**To hire a pastor, appoint a search committee of seven to eleven people, write a church profile and job description with a pay range, post the role through your denomination and Christian job boards, then screen sermons, interview, check references and backgrounds, and bring a finalist to the congregation. Plan on six to twelve months.**

## Key takeaways

| **Search stage** | **What your church decides** |
|---|---|
| Committee | Who serves (seven to eleven people, an odd number) and who the committee answers to |
| Church profile | Who you are today: attendance trend, budget, theology, community, and recent history |
| Job description | The title, your top three priorities, required credentials, and a published salary range |
| Posting | Denominational channels, seminaries, Christian job boards, and personal networks, all at once |
| Vetting | Recent sermons, at least two interviews, references beyond the list, and background checks |
| Onboarding | A written first-year plan, reviews at six and twelve months, and a formal end to the committee |

## How do you set up a pastor search committee?

A pastor search committee is the small group that works on behalf of the whole church. It builds the church profile, reads applications, interviews candidates, and brings one name forward.

How the committee forms depends on your church government. In congregational churches, including many Baptist and nondenominational congregations, members usually elect or approve the committee. In elder-led churches, the elders may serve as the committee or appoint one. In appointive denominations such as the United Methodist Church, a bishop assigns pastors, so start with your district or regional office before you do anything else.

William Vanderbloemen, whose firm runs pastor searches, [recommends seven to eleven members](https://www.vanderbloemen.com/blog/who-should-be-on-your-pastor-search-committee), always an odd number so a vote can't deadlock. He also warns against seating the person who joins every committee and opposes everything.

Choose members for judgment first and representation second. Thom Rainer of Church Answers has [written that committees built to represent every group in the church](https://churchanswers.com/blog/six-reasons-churches-taking-long-find-new-pastor/) are often the slowest ones. A strong committee usually includes one or two elders or deacons, members from different generations, someone who hires people at work (a school principal, a nurse manager, an HR director, or a small-business owner), and one detail-minded person to run logistics.

Keep staff who will report to the new pastor off the voting roster and interview them for input instead, so nobody is choosing their own boss.

Before the first meeting, put a short charter in writing:

- who the committee reports to, and who gives final approval
- the vote needed to recommend a candidate (unanimous, or a set supermajority), decided before any names are on the table
- a confidentiality covenant, because a leaked name can put a candidate's current position at risk
- a budget for travel, background checks, and any search firm fees
- how often the committee will update the congregation

Line up preaching coverage at the same time. An interim pastor or a rotation of pulpit supply preachers takes pressure off the committee, and a committee under pressure tends to settle.

## What should the church profile and pastor job description say?

Write three documents before anyone posts the job: a church profile, a job description, and a compensation sheet. Candidates read the first two to decide whether to apply, and the third keeps the committee from improvising pay during the final interview.

A useful church profile covers:

- average weekly attendance for the last five years, so candidates see the trend line
- the annual budget and giving trend, plus any debt
- staff size and which roles the pastor will supervise
- your denomination or network and the doctrinal standards a pastor must affirm
- the community around the church: age, growth, and what people do for work
- recent history, including conflict, a split, or a predecessor who served for decades

Strong candidates will ask about recent conflict anyway. Hearing it from the committee first builds trust, and it filters out pastors who aren't suited to a hard season.

The job description should name the title precisely. A solo pastor at a small rural church and a senior pastor leading a staff of twenty [do different jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/what-does-a-pastor-do), and the posting should make that obvious. Spell out the reporting line (elder board, deacons, church council), the preaching load in Sundays per year, the pastoral care expectations, the people the pastor will supervise, required credentials such as ordination or a Master of Divinity, the salary range and benefits, the location, and the start window.

Rank three priorities and say them plainly. A description that asks for a gifted preacher, counselor, administrator, fundraiser, and youth magnet describes nobody, and the committee will end up measuring every candidate against an imaginary one. If your church is plateaued in a growing suburb, outreach may come first. If it is recovering from a previous pastor's moral failure, trust and pastoral care may outrank everything else.

## How much should a church pay a new pastor?

[Pastor pay depends on church size](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/pastor-salary-by-church-size), region, budget, and the scope of the role, so start from market data and adjust for your context. According to ChristianJobsList.com salary data (as of October 2026), the 92 ministry listings from the past year with complete salary ranges had a median of about $51k, with a typical range of $42k to $63k. Our salary data reflects what employers advertised in those ministry listings, so treat it as a reference point. A senior pastor leading a large staff will likely need more.

For a second benchmark, clergy earned a median of $60,810 a year as of May 2025, according to the [Bureau of Labor Statistics](https://data.bls.gov/oesprofile/?year=2025&major_group=210000&occupation=212011&measure=01&areas=INDUSTRY,STATE,MSA). You can compare ministry pay with other church and nonprofit roles on our [Christian salary data page](https://www.christianjobslist.com/salaries).

Publish the range in the posting. In our salary data, only 92 of the 330 ministry listings from the past year included a complete salary range, so a church that shows its numbers stands out. A pastor with a family can't decide whether to apply without them, and candidates who need more will self-select out before they take up an interview slot.

A pastor's compensation package usually has more parts than a typical job offer:

- **Base salary.** The cash portion, set by the board or finance committee before posting.
- **Housing allowance.** The IRS lets a minister exclude a housing allowance from income tax, but only if the church [designates it in advance](https://www.irs.gov/faqs/interest-dividends-other-types-of-income/ministers-compensation-housing-allowance/ministers-compensation-housing-allowance), usually by board resolution. The exclusion is capped at the lowest of the designated amount, the actual housing cost, and the home's fair rental value.
- **Self-employment tax offset.** Ministers are treated as self-employed for Social Security and Medicare, so they pay the full self-employment tax themselves, as [IRS Publication 517](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p517) explains. Some churches add an offset to cover part of that cost.
- **Retirement and health coverage.** Many denominations run their own plans, such as GuideStone for Southern Baptist churches.
- **Time and growth.** Vacation, study leave, conference funds, and a sabbatical policy after a set number of years.
- **Moving costs.** A relocation budget, agreed in writing before the candidate accepts.

## Where should you post a pastor job opening?

Post in several places at the same time. Rainer lists waiting on denominational publications and reading resumes one at a time among the habits that make searches drag. A broad posting plan includes:

1. Your denomination's or network's placement office, regional body, or association.
2. Career and alumni offices at seminaries in your tradition.
3. Christian job boards that carry pastor and ministry openings.
4. Your church website, newsletter, and social media accounts.
5. Personal networks: pastors your elders trust, leaders of nearby churches, and mission agency contacts.
6. A pastor search firm, if the budget allows. Ask how the fee is calculated and what happens if the placement doesn't last.

Every posting should list the salary range, location, start window, and exactly what to send: a resume, links to two or three recent sermons, answers to a short doctrinal questionnaire, and references. Set an application deadline and a review date so candidates know when they'll hear back.

If [an associate pastor](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/associate-pastor-job-description) already on staff wants the lead role, consider that candidate openly and run the same process. Skipping steps for an insider makes it harder for the congregation to trust the result.

## How do you interview and vet pastor candidates?

Vetting runs in stages when you hire a pastor, and each stage narrows the pool before the committee spends travel money or weekend time.

```mermaid
    B --> C[Video interview]
```

### Listen to sermons before you read resumes closely

Ask for full recordings of recent services, not a highlight reel. Two or three sermons from different months show how a candidate handles ordinary Sundays. Save a live visit for finalists, since video covers most of the early screening.

### Ask questions that show how a candidate leads

[Good interview questions](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/pastor-interview-questions) ask for past behavior. A few that work for most churches:

- Tell us about a decision your board opposed and what you did next.
- How do you prepare a sermon across a normal week?
- Which part of our job description would be hardest for you?
- How have you handled a staff member who wasn't doing the job?
- What would you leave unchanged during your first year here?

### Check references beyond the list

The candidate's chosen references will speak well of them. Call those references, then ask each one for another person who knows the candidate's ministry, such as a former board chair or staff member. Get the candidate's permission before calling anyone at their current church. Chuck Lawless [notes that committees now review candidates' social media](https://churchleaders.com/pastors/408581-7-reasons-its-taking-longer-to-call-a-pastor.html) as part of vetting, so read a finalist's public posts before the weekend visit.

### Run background checks with written consent

Check criminal history and sex offender registries for every finalist. Add a driving record if the pastor will drive church vehicles and a credit check if the role handles church money. Verify ordination and degrees directly with the issuing body. When you use a screening company, federal law requires a written disclosure and the candidate's written permission, as the [EEOC and FTC guide on background checks](https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/guidance/background-checks-what-employers-need-know) explains. Your insurance carrier may have its own requirements, so ask.

### Hold a candidating weekend and a vote

The finalist preaches, meets staff and leaders, answers questions from members, and has time to see the community with their family. Your bylaws set the vote needed to call a pastor, so read them before the weekend. After the vote, send a written call letter that lists the full compensation package, start date, moving support, and review schedule.

Churches have wide legal room here. In [Hosanna-Tabor v. EEOC](https://www.oyez.org/cases/2011/10-553) (2012), the Supreme Court recognized a ministerial exception that keeps courts out of a religious group's choice of its ministers. Still, have an attorney familiar with church law review your process once.

## How long does it take to hire a pastor?

Rainer has argued that "in most cases, a church should be able to get a new pastor in six months or less." Writing in 2024, Lawless observed that "it takes many churches at least a year in their search for a new pastor," pointing to high resume volume, cautious vetting, and congregations researching candidates on their own.

A workable plan looks something like this:

| **Search phase** | **Planning window** |
|---|---|
| Form the committee and arrange preaching coverage | Weeks 1 to 4 |
| Church profile, job description, and pay range | Months 1 to 2 |
| Posting and collecting applications | Months 2 to 4 |
| Sermon review and interviews | Months 3 to 6 |
| Candidating weekend, vote, and call letter | Months 5 to 8 |
| Notice period and relocation | Depends on the candidate's current church and move |

Treat the table as a planning guide. Denominational approvals and a finalist who withdraws can each add months.

## How do you welcome and onboard a new pastor?

Onboarding starts before the first Sunday. Have housing settled, the office ready, and keys, email, and payroll set up. Send the congregation a letter introducing the pastor and their family, and schedule a meeting with the interim pastor so pastoral care cases are handed over properly.

During the first 90 days, give the new pastor a list of people to meet: elders, staff, key volunteers, longtime members, and homebound members who can't easily come to them. Many pastors use those early months to listen before proposing changes, and the board can protect that time by not handing over a list of fixes on day one.

Decide in writing who will review the pastor's work and when. A personnel committee or the elder board should hold check-ins at six and twelve months, using the three priorities from the job description as the measure.

Then formally thank and dissolve the search committee. A committee that keeps meeting after the hire can turn into a second board, and the new pastor needs one clear line of accountability. Some churches form a small transition team for the first year instead, to answer questions and pass along feedback.

The arrival of a new pastor also tends to show [where support is thin](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/church-staffing). If the pastor ends up spending hours on scheduling and bookkeeping, a church administrator can free that time, and our [church administration listings](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-administration-jobs) show how other churches describe those roles.

## What mistakes stall a pastor search?

These habits stall pastor searches:

- choosing a candidate as a reaction to the last pastor, either a copy or the opposite
- evaluating one candidate at a time, so every withdrawal sends the committee back to the start
- letting candidate names leak outside the room
- posting without a salary range and losing good applicants in the final interview
- going months without updating the congregation, which invites rumors
- skipping the background check because a candidate is well known

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does it take for a church to find a new pastor?

Timelines vary widely. Thom Rainer has written that most churches should be able to call a new pastor in six months or less, while Chuck Lawless noted in 2024 that many churches search for at least a year, citing high resume volume and cautious vetting after a hard experience.

### How many people should be on a pastor search committee?

William Vanderbloemen suggests seven to eleven members, in an odd number so votes can't deadlock. A very small church may need fewer. Choose members for spiritual maturity and sound judgment, include at least one person with hiring experience, and keep staff who will report to the new pastor off the voting roster.

### Who hires the pastor of a church?

Church government decides who hires the pastor. Congregational churches usually vote on a candidate recommended by a search committee. Elder-led churches often let the elders decide, sometimes with a congregational affirmation. In appointive denominations such as the United Methodist Church, a bishop assigns the pastor after consulting with the local church.

### What qualifications should a church look for in a pastor?

Start with the character qualifications in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1, then add what your denomination requires, such as ordination or a seminary degree. Beyond those, match experience to your top priorities, whether that is preaching, pastoral care, staff leadership, or revitalizing a declining church. Verify credentials for every finalist.

### Should a church use a pastor search firm?

A search firm makes sense when your committee lacks hiring experience, your network is thin, or the role is a senior pastor position over a large staff. Firms charge fees, so ask how the fee is calculated and whether it includes a replacement guarantee. Smaller churches often rely on denominational channels and job boards instead.

## Write the church profile before anyone reads a resume

Churches that hire a pastor well tend to know who they are before they decide who they need. Before your committee's first meeting, pull five years of attendance and giving figures and write one page on what the church needs from its next pastor over the next three years. Every later step, from the job description to the final vote, gets easier with that page on the table.

Hire a pastor: a step-by-step guide for church search committees

*Last updated October 2026*

A personality report can tell you that you'd do well as a nurse, a teacher, or a logistics manager. It can't tell you which of those God is asking you to say yes to, or whether staying in the job you already have is the faithful choice. Somewhere between the assessment results and the prayer journal, plenty of Christians stall out and start looking for someone to talk it through with.

**Faith-based career coaching is one-on-one guidance that pairs standard career tools, such as assessments and job-market research, with prayer, scripture, and attention to your spiritual gifts. It helps you find your calling by testing your gifts, the needs you notice, and job options through feedback and small experiments.**

## Key takeaways

| **Before you book a coach** | **What to check** |
|---|---|
| Whether you need one | Coaching fits a stuck decision or a field change; urgent job hunts and clinical anxiety need other help |
| Credentials | "Coach" is not a licensed title, so ask about ICF or career-development training and how many clients they've served |
| Method | Ask which assessments they use, how sessions run, and what you'll have in hand at the end |
| Theology | Ask how they use scripture and prayer, and whether they ever claim to hear God's will for you |
| Cost | Get the total price, number of sessions, assessment fees, and refund terms in writing |
| Doing it yourself | Four of the five ingredients career research ties to effective guidance can start on your own: written exercises, feedback from people who know you, job-market research, and small experiments |

## What happens in faith-based career coaching?

Faith-based career coaching follows the usual career-coaching arc, with prayer and scripture throughout. A typical engagement starts with an intake conversation about where you are and what's pressing. Then come assessments of interests, personality, values, and sometimes spiritual gifts. Then comes a series of sessions that interpret those results and explore specific career paths, ending with a plan you can act on. That plan might be a job search, a training program, or a decision to stay put and work differently.

The faith part shows up in a few concrete ways. A Christian coach may open sessions in prayer, connect your strengths to passages like 1 Peter 4:10 and Romans 12, and treat questions about family, church, generosity, and rest as part of the career decision. One provider describes its approach as combining "biblical wisdom, prayer, the best career tests, and proven career development strategies," which is a fair summary of the category ([Christian Career Center](https://www.christiancareercenter.com/christian-career-coach-faith-based-coaching/), as of October 2026).

Career coaching often gets confused with three other kinds of help. Each is built for something different:

| **Kind of help** | **What it's built for** |
|---|---|
| Career coach | Clarifying direction, exploring options, and building a plan and job search |
| Licensed counselor (LPC, LMHC) | Anxiety, depression, grief, or burnout that is affecting your ability to work |
| Spiritual director | Paying attention to God in your whole life, of which work is one part |
| Pastor or mentor | Counsel from someone who knows you, your family, and your church over years |

Plenty of people need two of these at once. A nurse leaving the bedside after a hard few years might see a counselor for the burnout and a coach for the next step. Knowing which is which keeps you from paying a coach to do a counselor's job.

## When does a Christian career coach help, and when is it the wrong spend?

A Christian career coach earns the fee when the problem is a decision you keep circling, as in these situations:

- You have two or three viable paths and can't choose, such as staying in classroom teaching, moving into school administration, or leaving education for corporate training.
- You're changing industries and don't know how your experience translates, like a youth pastor moving into [nonprofit program management](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/christian-nonprofit-jobs) or an electrician considering a move into construction management.
- You're returning to work after years of caregiving and need to rebuild a résumé and confidence at the same time.
- You were laid off and want to use the disruption to reconsider direction before grabbing the first offer.
- You feel [pulled toward full-time ministry](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/called-to-ministry) or out of it, and you want a structured way to test that pull.

Coaching is a weaker fit in a few situations. If you need a paycheck within a month, spend the money on targeted résumé help and the hours on applications. If you're dealing with depression or anxiety, start with a licensed counselor. And if you're hoping someone will hand you a verdict on God's will, no coach can do that, and a good one will tell you so in the first session.

Job changes are normal, which takes some pressure off any single decision. Americans born from 1957 to 1964 held an average of 12.9 jobs between ages 18 and 58, according to the [U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics](https://www.bls.gov/news.release/nlsoy.nr0.htm) (August 2025 release). With that many job changes in a working life, the question in front of you is usually the next faithful step.

## Which credentials should a faith-based career coach have?

Career coaching is not a licensed profession in the U.S., so anyone can call themselves a coach. Credentials are voluntary, which makes them worth asking about. The International Coaching Federation (ICF) runs a three-level credential, and the requirements climb steeply by level, according to the [ICF's credential paths page](https://coachingfederation.org/credentials-and-standards/credentials-paths) (as of October 2026):

- ACC (Associate Certified Coach): at least 60 hours of coaching education, 100 hours of coaching experience with 8 or more clients, and a passing exam score.
- PCC (Professional Certified Coach): at least 125 hours of coaching education and 500 hours of experience with 25 or more clients.
- MCC (Master Certified Coach): at least 200 hours of coaching education and 2,500 hours of experience with 35 or more clients.

Other relevant backgrounds include career-development credentials through the [National Career Development Association](https://www.ncda.org/), a master's degree in counseling, or years of hiring experience in the field you're trying to enter. A coach with a seminary degree brings theological depth, though that alone says nothing about their knowledge of today's job market. The best faith-based career coaching pairs both.

Credentials tell you someone has trained. They don't tell you whether the coach understands your field. A coach who has helped dozens of teachers move into instructional design is probably a better match for a teacher than a more decorated coach who mostly works with executives. Ask for the kinds of clients they serve most often, and if they offer references, call one.

## How much does a Christian career coach cost?

Coaching is priced in two ways: per session or as a package with a fixed number of sessions and assessments. Package prices vary widely. One Christian career coaching provider publishes programs ranging from $499 to $1,995 with a free initial consultation ([Christian Career Center](https://www.christiancareercenter.com/christian-career-coach-faith-based-coaching/), as of October 2026). Other coaches charge by the hour, and hourly rates vary with a coach's training and the clients they serve. Treat any single price as one data point.

Before you pay, get answers to these questions, ideally in writing:

1. "What is the total cost, and how many sessions does it cover?"
2. "Are assessment fees included, or billed separately?"
3. "Can I reach you between sessions, and is that included?"
4. "What will I have in hand when we finish?" Look for something specific, such as a written plan, a revised résumé, or a list of target employers.
5. "What happens if I need to pause or stop partway through?"
6. "Is the first conversation free, and will you tell me if coaching isn't the right fit?"

Then ask the faith questions, which a secular coach would never need to answer:

- "How do you bring prayer and scripture into sessions?"
- "Do you hold to a particular statement of faith or tradition, and does that shape your advice?"
- "How do you handle a client whose sense of calling points somewhere you wouldn't choose for them?"
- "Have you ever told a client what God wants them to do?"

That last question has a right answer. A coach should help you pray and weigh counsel. A coach who claims special insight into God's plan for your career is overstepping, and that's a reason to keep looking.

## What red flags should you watch for in a Christian career coach?

Watch the sales conversation, before you've paid anything. Walk away if you see:

- A guarantee that you'll land a job, a raise, or a specific salary.
- Pressure to buy the largest package on the first call, or a discount that expires in hours.
- No clear description of the process, or a refusal to say which assessments they use.
- Spiritual language used to close the sale, such as suggesting that hesitating to sign up means resisting God.
- Advice that ignores your obligations, like urging a parent of three to quit a stable job with no savings because "faith requires risk."

Christian coaching should leave you freer to decide, with more clarity about your own gifts and more confidence in prayer. If a coach makes you feel dependent on them for the next step, that coach is not serving you well.

## Five discernment exercises you can start before hiring anyone

Career-development research summarized by [Biola University's Center for Christian Thought](https://cct.biola.edu/finding-your-calling-5-tips-psychology-and-spiritual-theology-help-you-find-your-vocation/) points to five ingredients that make career guidance work: written exercises, individualized interpretation and feedback, accurate occupational information, modeling, and building support. A paid coach bundles all five. You can begin four of them on your own this week, and doing so will make any coaching you buy later faster and cheaper.

### Write a gladness and hunger inventory

The novelist and minister Frederick Buechner described calling as "the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet" in his 1973 book *Wishful Thinking*. Turn that into two lists on paper. On the left, write tasks from any job or volunteer role when time disappeared and you felt most yourself. On the right, write problems you can't stop noticing: kids who can't read on grade level, patients who leave the hospital confused about their medications, small churches with books nobody balances.

Draw lines between the columns. The connections are not job titles yet, but they narrow the field. A person whose left column is "explaining things patiently" and right column is "confused patients" is pointing somewhere near patient education, discharge nursing, or pharmacy.

### Run a two-week examen on your workdays

The examen, a reflection practice from Ignatius of Loyola, asks you to look back over each day for two things: the moments you felt most alive and close to God, and the moments you felt drained or far from Him. Ignatius called these consolation and desolation. Spend five minutes on them every evening for two weeks, and write the answers down.

Then read the two weeks back. You may find that the hours you dread are the ones you assumed were your strengths, or that the part of the job you treat as a side task is the part you look forward to.

### Ask three people what they come to you for

[Scripture on wisdom and counsel](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/bible-verses-about-wisdom) assumes calling gets confirmed in community.

> "Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out." (Proverbs 20:5, KJV)

Pick three people who have watched you work or serve: a former supervisor, a ministry leader, a longtime friend. Ask them one specific question: "What do people come to me for?" Ask them to answer with examples. Their answers do the job of a coach's feedback, and they come from people who have seen you on ordinary days.

### Read 20 job listings like a researcher

Pick the two or three paths from your inventory and read at least 20 current listings for each, noting duties, required credentials, schedules, and pay. The free [O*NET Interest Profiler](https://www.mynextmove.org/explore/ip) can add career names you hadn't considered.

Christian employers hire across a wide range of work. According to ChristianJobsList.com listing data (as of October 2026), healthcare accounted for 7,657 of the 20,564 listings posted in the 12 months before that date. A sense of calling to care for people may lead to a [Christian healthcare job](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-healthcare-jobs) as easily as a church staff role.

Pay belongs in the research too, because providing for your household is part of faithful work (1 Timothy 5:8). In our salary data, the 6,470 healthcare roles with complete salary ranges show a median of about $71k, the 426 education roles a median of about $58k, and the 65 youth ministry roles a median of about $38k. Those yearly figures convert hourly pay using a 40-hour week, so if you plan to work part time or per diem, scale the number down to the hours you expect to put in. Check [pay by job category](https://www.christianjobslist.com/salaries) for the paths on your list before you settle on one your household can't afford.

### Test the path with a small, low-cost experiment

Another of the five ingredients, modeling, means watching people who already do the work. Before committing to a degree or a move, ask to shadow someone for a day, take one evening course, volunteer in the setting, or hold three informational interviews with people in the role. A future school counselor could volunteer with a church's after-school tutoring program. A would-be nonprofit fundraiser could help run one event.

> "A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps." (Proverbs 16:9, KJV)

Small experiments let you plan and [still leave room for God to redirect](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/trusting-god-with-your-career). They also give a coach, if you hire one later, something concrete to work with besides your hopes.

## How do you know a calling from a strong preference?

Christians have long distinguished between a primary calling, to follow Christ, and [secondary callings to particular work](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/faith-and-work) and places. Os Guinness lays this out in *The Call* (1998). The distinction lowers the stakes. Your first calling doesn't change when your job does, and no single career decision can make you miss it.

> "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." (Ephesians 2:10, KJV)

A secondary calling tends to show several marks at once, and one alone is weak evidence:

- Your gifts fit the work, and people who know you confirm it.
- The work meets a need you keep noticing.
- The desire persists through prayer over months.
- A door opens: an offer, a training slot, a role that fits your circumstances.
- The path lets you meet your obligations to family and church.

A preference usually shows one or two of these. A lasting pull that checks most of them is worth acting on.

Ordinary jobs count as callings, so an accountant at a Christian college, a teacher at a public school, and a maintenance tech at a retirement community can all be living out a call. [Christian education jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-education-jobs) and [Christian nonprofit jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-nonprofit-jobs) span a much wider set of roles than pastoral work.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do you know what career God is calling you to?

You know what career God is calling you to by weighing several signs together: gifts that others confirm, a need you keep noticing, a desire that lasts through prayer, an open door, and a path that lets you meet your obligations. Write down each sign, ask trusted people for feedback, and test the direction with small experiments before committing.

### How do you find a legit career coach?

A legit career coach can explain how they work and what it costs before you pay. Look for ICF credentials or career-development training, experience with clients in your field, a written list of what's included, and no guaranteed outcomes. A free first conversation helps you judge fit. Avoid anyone who pressures you to sign up quickly.

### What are signs of a spiritual calling?

Signs of a spiritual calling include a desire that persists through months of prayer, gifts that people who know you confirm, a burden for a specific group or problem, and circumstances that open a way forward. Since no single sign settles the question, Christians have traditionally tested a sense of calling against scripture and the counsel of their church community.

### Is there free Christian career coaching?

Free options exist, though they rarely cover everything a paid coach provides. Start with your pastor or a mentor, your college's career center (many serve alumni), and the free career services at American Job Centers, which you can locate through [CareerOneStop](https://www.careeronestop.org/). Pair those with the free O*NET Interest Profiler and a written discernment exercise.

### How can I find my calling in life?

You can find your calling in life by starting with your first calling, to follow Christ, and then exploring specific work through written reflection, feedback from people who know you, research into real jobs, and small experiments. A calling usually becomes clear through action over time. Expect to refine it across several jobs and seasons.

## Ask three people one question before you book a consultation

The cheapest step in faith-based career coaching is also the one that sharpens every step after it. Send a short message today to three people who have seen you work or serve, asking what people come to you for and for one example each. Bring their answers to your next time of prayer, and to a coach's free consultation if you decide to book one, so the first paid hour starts with evidence about you instead of a blank page.

Faith-based career coaching: how to find your calling

The senior pastor is finishing Sunday's sermon at 11 p.m. on Saturday because the week went to a leaking boiler, a payroll question from the bookkeeper, a budget review with the finance team, and two ministry directors who needed someone to settle a calendar fight. At the next elder meeting, someone suggests hiring an executive pastor, and nobody at the table can say exactly what that person would do all week.

**An executive pastor job description centers on the church's operations: leading and evaluating staff, managing the budget and finances, overseeing facilities and administration, and turning the senior pastor's vision into plans with owners and deadlines. The executive pastor usually reports to the senior pastor, and churches hire for ministry experience plus proven management skill.**

## Key takeaways

| **What you'd want to know** | **How it usually works** |
|---|---|
| Main job | Runs the church as an organization: staff, money, buildings, systems, and plans |
| Reporting line | Reports to the senior or lead pastor; supervises ministry directors, operations and finance staff, and the administrative team |
| When churches add it | When the senior pastor can no longer preach, lead, and manage a growing staff at the same time |
| Background | Ministry leadership plus management experience; seminary training is often preferred |
| Pay | ReachRight's 2026 midpoints run from $70,000 at 100-249 in weekly attendance to $150,500 at 5,000 or more |

## What does an executive pastor do?

An executive pastor is the church's second-in-command for the work that keeps ministry running: people, money, buildings, calendars, and decisions. Church staffing firm [Vanderbloemen](https://www.vanderbloemen.com/resources/lead-pastor-vs-executive-pastor/) compares the position to a chief operating officer. The senior pastor sets direction and preaches, and the executive pastor builds the structure that carries that direction out on Monday morning.

A typical executive pastor job description groups the work into four areas.

### Staff leadership and human resources

Leading the staff is usually the heaviest part of the job. The executive pastor hires, onboards, coaches, and evaluates ministry directors and support staff, from the worship leader and student pastor to the receptionist and facilities manager. Weekly staff meetings, one-on-ones, annual reviews, and the staff handbook all land on this desk.

The HR side brings legal and practical detail: job descriptions, pay scales, benefits enrollment, background checks for anyone who works with children, and the hard conversations when someone needs to be let go. A good executive pastor deals with friction between staff members early, before it reaches the senior pastor or the congregation.

### Finance and stewardship

Executive pastors usually own the annual budget. They build it with ministry leaders, present it to the elders or finance committee, and watch giving and spending month by month. They work with the bookkeeper or business administrator on payroll, cash flow, audits, insurance, and designated funds, and they're often the one who explains a giving shortfall to the board in plain numbers.

### Operations, facilities, and administration

Buildings, technology, safety, and systems make up the third area: maintenance contracts, church management software, facility scheduling, security teams, child check-in procedures, and the policies behind each of them. At a larger church, a [director of operations](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/church-operations-director) or a facilities manager handles the daily work and reports to the executive pastor.

### Strategy and execution

Strategy work starts with the senior pastor's goals. A senior pastor might want to launch a second campus in three years or double the number of small groups. The executive pastor turns that goal into a 12-month plan with a budget, staffing, milestones, and a named owner for each piece, then tracks progress in staff meetings. Many executive pastors also serve as the staff liaison to the elder board and to the personnel and finance committees.

## How is an executive pastor different from a senior or associate pastor?

The three pastor titles on a church staff describe different jobs. The senior pastor (many churches say lead pastor) owns the vision and the pulpit for the whole church. The executive pastor owns the organization. An [associate pastor usually owns a ministry area](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/associate-pastor-job-description) or a share of the preaching and pastoral care.

| **Role** | **Main focus** | **Typical reporting line** |
|---|---|---|
| Senior or lead pastor | Vision, preaching, teaching, and pastoral leadership of the congregation | Reports to the elders, board, or denomination |
| Executive pastor | Staff, budget, operations, and turning vision into plans | Reports to the senior pastor and supervises ministry, operations, and administrative staff |
| Associate pastor | A ministry area such as discipleship, care, or worship, plus some preaching | Reports to the senior pastor or the executive pastor |

Vanderbloemen notes that in most church structures the executive pastor reports directly to the lead pastor. That makes the senior pastor the boss, and the job depends on the two trusting each other. In a [Phil Cooke interview on the role](https://www.philcooke.com/executive-pastor/), executive pastor Mike Buster names a deep, trusting relationship with the pastor as one of the essentials and lists a lack of trust among the reasons executive pastors fail.

Associate pastors spend their weeks with people in a ministry: preaching, leading small groups, visiting hospitals, training volunteers. An executive pastor might preach a few times a year, if at all, and spends the week in meetings about staff and money. At churches that have both roles, associate pastors often report to the executive pastor.

## When do churches create an executive pastor role?

Churches tend to create the position when the senior pastor becomes the bottleneck. Decisions wait on the pastor's calendar, staff members go months without anyone coaching them, the budget gets built once a year and never revisited, and small things start falling through the cracks.

Size is part of the picture. [Dan Reiland](https://danreiland.com/needs-executive-pastor-anyway/), who served on staff at 12Stone Church under senior pastor Kevin Myers, writes that a church not yet averaging close to 1,200 in attendance is probably a little early for an executive pastor, and one averaging 1,800 is probably late. Those are one leader's benchmarks. Plenty of smaller churches use the title, often for a hybrid job that mixes operations with preaching or oversight of a ministry area.

An executive pastor makes the most sense when the staff needs a leader. When the pressure is mainly paperwork and buildings, a church administrator or business manager usually fits better and costs less. The flowchart below walks through that decision.

## A sample executive pastor job description you can adapt

[Search committees](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/hire-a-pastor) often start from another church's posting and end up with a list of duties nobody could do in one week. The template below keeps the job to what an executive pastor owns. Adjust the supervision and budget lines to your church's size.

**Position summary:** The executive pastor leads the church staff and operations so the senior pastor can focus on preaching and vision. The executive pastor turns church-wide goals into plans and staff assignments, and holds the team accountable for carrying them out.

**Reports to:** Senior pastor

**Supervises:** Ministry directors, operations and finance staff, and the administrative team

**Primary responsibilities:**

- Hire, train, coach, and evaluate staff, and maintain the employee handbook and personnel policies
- Lead weekly staff meetings and keep ministry calendars aligned with church-wide priorities
- Build the annual budget with ministry leaders, present it to the finance committee, and report monthly on giving and spending
- Oversee facilities, technology, safety and security, insurance, and child protection policies
- Translate the senior pastor's long-range goals into an annual plan with owners and deadlines
- Serve as staff liaison to the elders and the finance and personnel committees
- Preach or teach occasionally, as the senior pastor requests

**Qualifications:**

- Meets the character standards in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1, and affirms the church's statement of faith
- Bachelor's degree required; seminary training or a graduate degree in ministry or business preferred
- Several years of ministry leadership, including supervising paid staff and managing a budget
- Working knowledge of church finance and HR practices

**Schedule:** Full time, including Sundays and evening elder and committee meetings

## What qualifications do churches look for in an executive pastor?

Many churches prefer a Master of Divinity or a master's in ministry or leadership, and some weigh an MBA or business degree just as heavily, since much of the job is management.

Experience usually counts for more than degrees. Churches tend to look for a record of supervising people and owning a budget, plus enough time in ministry to understand how a church staff works. Some executive pastors come from business careers in operations or finance. Others rise from inside church staffs as associate pastors or ministry directors who took on more administrative work over time.

The job calls for practical skills:

- Building a budget and reading a monthly financial statement
- Hiring, coaching, and letting people go with both grace and legal care
- Running meetings and keeping project plans on schedule
- Resolving conflict between staff members before it spreads
- Writing clear board reports and policies

Spiritual maturity sits alongside those skills. Because the title includes "pastor," many churches apply the elder qualifications in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 to the hire. Mike Buster, in the same Phil Cooke interview, lists a weak prayer life and an inability to tell a spiritual problem from a managerial one among the reasons executive pastors fail. An executive pastor who treats every staff conflict as a process problem, or every process problem as a spiritual one, will struggle.

## How much does an executive pastor make?

Executive pastor cash pay, meaning salary plus any housing allowance, has a midpoint of $70,000 at churches of 100 to 249 in weekly attendance, $96,600 at 500 to 999, $110,600 at 1,000 to 1,999, and $150,500 at 5,000 or more, according to [ReachRight's 2026 pastor salary benchmarks](https://reachrightstudios.com/blog/pastor-salary-by-church-size/) (last reviewed July 2026). Those figures leave out benefits. ReachRight puts the executive pastor just below [the senior pastor at each size](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/pastor-salary-by-church-size): $110,600 against $118,500 at 1,000 to 1,999.

Our salary data does not break out executive pastors as their own category, but two nearby categories give a broader picture. Across the 92 ministry roles with complete salary ranges, pay typically runs $42k-$63k, with a median of about $51k, according to ChristianJobsList.com salary data (as of October 2026). Operations roles, a broad category covering operations jobs at every kind of employer on the board, run $44k-$95k across 1,216 listings, with a median of about $63k. Pay for youth ministry, finance, administration, and other categories is broken out on our [salary pages](https://www.christianjobslist.com/salaries).

Use ReachRight's bands for the role itself and our figures as background. Within any band, the church's budget sets the ceiling.

Clergy tax rules can change the take-home picture. If you're ordained, commissioned, or licensed and the church treats you as a minister, part of your pay may be designated as a housing allowance, and you'll pay self-employment tax on ministerial earnings. The IRS explains both in [Publication 517](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p517). Ask the church whether the role qualifies before you compare offers.

## How do you become an executive pastor?

People reach the role from two directions: up through church staff, or across from a business or nonprofit career. Either way, the steps look similar.

1. Get management experience where you are. Ask to supervise people or own a budget line.
2. Learn church finance specifics, such as designated giving, housing allowances, church audits, and how a finance committee works.
3. Build your theological grounding. Coming from business, that might mean seminary courses or a denomination's licensing track. Coming from ministry, it might mean a leadership or business course.
4. Serve on the governing side. Time on a finance committee or elder board shows you how decisions get made.
5. Search under every title churches use for the job, including executive pastor, pastor of operations, executive director, and director of operations. Our [Christian operations jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-operations-jobs) and [church administration jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-administration-jobs) pages carry operations and executive director roles, and senior-level openings at ministries and nonprofits appear under [Christian executive jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-executive-jobs).

When you read any executive pastor job description, look for three things: who reports to the role, how much budget authority it carries, and how often the senior pastor and the executive pastor meet. Those three answers tell you more than the list of duties.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is another name for an executive pastor?

Churches use several titles for similar work, including pastor of operations, executive director, director of ministries, church administrator, and chief of staff. The titles don't always carry the same authority. Read the reporting line, the number of direct reports, and the budget responsibilities in a posting to see whether it is an executive role.

### Can a woman be an executive pastor?

The answer depends on the church's theology of pastoral leadership. Denominations that ordain women use the executive pastor title for women in the role. Many complementarian churches reserve the title "pastor" for men but hire women to lead the same operations and staff work under titles like executive director or director of operations.

### Is a lead pastor the same as a senior pastor?

In many churches, yes. "Lead pastor" and "senior pastor" both name the pastor who preaches most Sundays and supervises the executive pastor. Some churches prefer "lead pastor" because it sounds less hierarchical. A few use both titles, with a senior pastor near retirement and a lead pastor running the church day to day.

### Does an executive pastor need to be ordained?

Ordination depends on the denomination and the church. Many executive pastors are ordained or licensed, especially when the role includes preaching, sacraments, or a seat on the elder board. Others come from business and are hired without ordination, sometimes under a title like executive director. Ordination can also affect taxes, since housing allowance rules apply only to qualifying ministers.

## Ask the senior pastor which decisions are yours

In an interview for an executive pastor role, ask which decisions you could make without checking first: hiring a ministry assistant, moving money between budget lines, or changing the facility calendar for a wedding. If every answer is "bring it to me," the church is hiring an assistant with a bigger title.

Executive pastor job description: duties, qualifications, and pay

Monday morning in a church office starts with the voicemail light. A couple wants to hold a June wedding date, a funeral home needs a time for Thursday's service, and a member asks to take her husband's name off the prayer list because he's home from the hospital. All three calls land on one desk before the pastor arrives, and the person at that desk has to know what to do with each one.

**A church secretary job description covers running the church office: answering phones and greeting visitors, producing bulletins and newsletters, keeping membership and giving records, scheduling rooms and events, and supporting the pastor. Church secretaries usually report to the senior pastor, and many positions at smaller churches are part time.**

## Key takeaways

| **Job element** | **Typical in a church office** |
| --- | --- |
| Core duties | Phones, visitors, bulletins, newsletters, membership records, the building calendar, and pastor support |
| Reports to | The senior or lead pastor; at larger churches, a church administrator or executive pastor |
| Software | A church management system such as Planning Center or Breeze, plus Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace |
| Confidentiality | Counseling appointments, giving records, and member details stay inside the office |
| Hours | Part time is common at small congregations; full time shows up as attendance and staff grow |
| Pay | Church-office roles often pay less than administrative jobs at Christian schools, hospitals, and nonprofits |

## What does a church secretary do?

A church secretary keeps the church office running so the pastor and ministry staff can spend their time on people. A typical church secretary job description groups the work into five areas, and at a small church one person covers all of them.

### Front office and hospitality

On weekdays, the church secretary is often the first person a caller or visitor talks to. That means answering phones, greeting walk-ins, sorting mail, and fielding requests for help with rent or groceries from people in the community. Many churches ask the secretary to follow a written benevolence policy, so a request gets the same answer no matter who answers the phone.

### Bulletins, newsletters, and announcements

[Weekly communication](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/church-marketing-director) eats a large share of the job. The secretary collects announcements from ministry leaders, builds the Sunday bulletin or order of worship, sends the weekly email, and updates the church website or social media pages. Some also prepare the lyrics and announcement slides for the worship team.

### Records and the church database

Membership rolls, attendance, new-member classes, baptisms, weddings, and funerals all go into the church records. The secretary enters visitor cards, updates addresses, and pulls reports for the pastor or the elder board. In churches that keep paper registers for sacraments, the secretary may maintain those as well.

### The building calendar and events

Room scheduling gets complicated when the youth group and a wedding rehearsal both want the fellowship hall on the same Friday night. The secretary keeps the master calendar, handles facility rental requests, and coordinates weddings and funerals with families and funeral homes.

### Support for the pastor and financial records

Pastoral support includes managing the pastor's calendar, typing correspondence, preparing agendas and minutes for board meetings, and ordering supplies. On the money side, the secretary may enter offering totals and send year-end giving statements.

Churches commonly separate cash-handling duties, with two unrelated people counting the offering and someone other than the counter making the deposit. If a posting asks you to count, record, and deposit by yourself, ask how the church protects both its funds and you.

## What does a typical week in the church office look like?

The church calendar gives the job a rhythm that most office jobs don't have. A common pattern runs like this:

- Monday: return weekend voicemails, enter Sunday's attendance and offering records, and collect announcements for next week.
- Tuesday and Wednesday: draft the bulletin, send it to the pastor for review, and get the weekly email out.
- Thursday: print bulletins, send the order of worship and slides to the worship team, and confirm weekend room setups.
- Friday: many church offices close or keep short hours, since staff work on Sunday.

Some weeks break the pattern. Christmas and Holy Week bring extra services, extra bulletins, and choir rehearsals to schedule. Vacation Bible School brings registrations and volunteer lists, and a funeral means coordinating with the family, the pastor, and the musicians.

## Which software does a church secretary use?

Much of the job happens on a computer, and church postings frequently name specific systems. The tools fall into four groups.

- **Church management system (ChMS):** Planning Center and Breeze are two common examples. They hold member profiles, attendance, groups, volunteer schedules, and giving records.
- **Office suite:** Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace for letters, spreadsheets, shared calendars, and email.
- **Design and email tools:** Canva for bulletins and social posts, and an email service such as Mailchimp for the weekly newsletter.
- **Giving and bookkeeping:** online giving platforms such as Tithe.ly or Pushpay, and QuickBooks where the secretary assists the treasurer.

If you've used a ChMS as a volunteer, put its name on your resume. A church that runs Planning Center will notice a candidate who has already scheduled volunteers in it, and the same goes for Breeze or any system the posting names.

## How should a church secretary handle confidential information?

Confidentiality is one of the first things churches screen for, because the secretary sees more private information than almost anyone on staff. The church secretary knows who booked a counseling appointment with the pastor, how much each family gave last year, which members are in a church discipline process, and whose background check came back with a problem.

Practical habits protect that information:

- Don't confirm or deny who met with the pastor, even to a spouse or a staff member.
- Ask before a prayer request goes on the email list. A hospital stay may be public; a diagnosis or a marriage crisis may not be.
- Lock your screen when you step away from the front desk, since visitors stand right next to it.
- Keep giving records and payroll files in restricted folders, and mail contribution statements to the address on file.

Scripture gives the standard in plain words:

> "A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret." (Proverbs 11:13, NIV)

## What skills and qualifications do churches look for?

Formal education requirements for the role are modest. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry-level education for [secretaries and administrative assistants](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/office-and-administrative-support/secretaries-and-administrative-assistants.htm) (as of its 2025 data). Churches tend to weigh experience and fit more heavily than a degree.

Skills that appear across church secretary postings include:

- Organization, with many deadlines running at once
- Clear writing and careful proofreading, since bulletin typos get read by the whole congregation
- Comfort with the software above, or proof that you learn new systems fast
- A calm, warm manner with grieving families and people asking for help
- Discretion with sensitive information

Faith requirements vary by church. Many churches ask staff to [sign their doctrinal statement](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/working-at-a-church), and some require membership. Expect questions about your walk with Christ in the interview too. Because the office handles money and information about children, a background check is also standard practice at many churches.

## How much does a church secretary make?

[Administration roles](https://www.christianjobslist.com/salaries/administration) have a median of about $50k, with the middle half of salaries falling between $42k and $66k, according to ChristianJobsList.com listing data (as of October 2026). That figure comes from 602 administration listings that published a complete pay range. To compare administration with other fields, see [salary figures by job category](https://www.christianjobslist.com/salaries).

That category covers administrative work at schools, hospitals, ministries, and nonprofits. Church-office secretary jobs often sit lower, especially at small congregations with small budgets. ChurchJobs.net, for example, puts the [typical church secretary range](https://www.churchjobs.net/jobs/description/secretarial/) at $28,000 to $52,000 a year. For a cross-sector comparison, the BLS reports a median of $47,540 for secretaries and administrative assistants outside the legal, medical, and executive fields (as of May 2025).

Two notes help you read our numbers. Each listing counts at the midpoint of its posted range, and we convert hourly rates to yearly pay using 2,080 hours, a full-time schedule. A part-time church office job advertised at an hourly rate will show a full-time equivalent in our data, so a 20-hour position pays about half that figure in practice. Expect pay to shift with the size of the congregation and the local cost of living.

## Should you look for part-time or full-time church office work?

[Part-time positions are common](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/christian-part-time-jobs) in church offices, partly because most congregations are small. Half of the roughly 350,000 religious congregations in the U.S. had 65 or fewer people at weekend worship in 2020, according to the [Faith Communities Today survey](https://faithcommunitiestoday.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Faith-Communities-Today-2020-Summary-Report.pdf). A church that size may hire one part-time secretary to run the whole office. At a church of 1,000, the same work is often split among an office manager, a receptionist, and a finance assistant.

Part-time church secretary jobs often combine roles. Small churches sometimes post one position covering secretary, clerk, and treasurer duties, or secretary plus custodial or nursery coordination. Read the duties list closely and price the job by everything it asks.

Each schedule suits a different season of life:

- Part time works for parents of school-age kids and for retirees, and office hours often match the school day.
- Full time brings benefits more often, plus a clearer path to titles like church administrator or [operations director](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/church-operations-director).
- Hours tend to run long around Christmas and Easter either way, so ask how overtime or comp time is handled.

## How do you get hired as a church secretary?

Experience from almost any front office transfers. A medical receptionist knows scheduling and privacy rules, a school secretary knows parents and calendars, and a retail manager knows staff schedules and cash handling.

1. Read each church secretary job description line by line and match your experience to its duties in your resume, using the church's own words.
2. Volunteer in your own church office or on a ministry team that uses the church database, so you can name a ChMS on your resume.
3. Prepare a short testimony and read the beliefs page on the church's website before the interview.
4. Bring a sample of your writing, such as a newsletter or flyer you made, since communication is a big part of the job.
5. Ask who you'll report to, whether you'll handle money, what the office hours are, and how holiday weeks are staffed.

Current openings are listed under [Christian administration jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-administration-jobs). Secretaries who take on budgets and facilities often move into [church and ministry operations roles](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-operations-jobs), and those who grow into bookkeeping can look at [Christian finance jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-finance-jobs).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between a church clerk and a church secretary?

In many Baptist and congregational churches, the church clerk is an elected member who records minutes of church business meetings and keeps the official membership roll. The church secretary is usually paid staff who runs the office day to day. Small churches sometimes give both jobs to one person, so read postings carefully.

### What is the church secretary?

The meaning depends on the country and denomination. In the United States, a church secretary is usually a paid member of the office staff. In British Baptist churches, the church secretary is an appointed lay officer and a charity trustee who makes sure the church follows its constitution, according to the [Baptists Together welcome pack](https://www.baptist.org.uk/Publisher/File.aspx?ID=323272).

### What are the main duties of a secretary?

Across industries, secretaries and administrative assistants schedule appointments, answer phones, keep files, and prepare documents, according to the BLS. A church secretary does all of that and adds ministry tasks: weekly bulletins, membership records, wedding and funeral coordination, prayer list updates, and confidential pastoral scheduling. The church version also follows the rhythm of Sunday services.

### What is the 80/20 rule in churches?

The 80/20 rule in churches is an informal rule of thumb that a small share of members, roughly 20 percent, does about 80 percent of the volunteering and giving. It's an observation borrowed from the Pareto principle, not a measured statistic. Church secretaries often see it in volunteer schedules, where the same names fill many slots.

## A month of bulletins shows the workload

Before you apply, pick up or download the church's last four bulletins and newsletters. Count the events, announcements, ministries, and sign-ups in them, because someone in the office collected, formatted, scheduled, and proofread every one. If the list runs long and the posting says 20 hours a week, bring that page to the interview and ask how the hours were set.

Church secretary job description: duties, software, and pay

A church with even one employee has to run payroll, renew its property insurance, answer a call from the alarm company at 2 a.m., and decide who gets the fellowship hall when a wedding and a youth lock-in land on the same Saturday. Once a congregation adds paid staff or a second building, the work usually lands on one desk, and the person behind that desk is the church operations director.

**A church operations director runs a church's business side, including budgets, facilities, HR and payroll, technology, and safety, so pastors can focus on ministry. Operations roles pay a median of about $63k across 1,216 listings with complete salary ranges, according to ChristianJobsList.com listing data (as of October 2026), and one large-church posting reaches $115k-$135k.**

## Key takeaways

| **Part of the role** | **What we found** |
|---|---|
| Core duties | Budgets and giving reports, buildings and security, HR policies and payroll, vendors, insurance, and church technology |
| Reporting line | Usually the lead or senior pastor; sometimes an executive pastor at large churches |
| Pay on our board | Operations listings: median about $63k (1,216 roles with ranges). Administration listings: median about $50k (602 roles) |
| Pay in church postings | $68k-$78k at a 1,150-member church; $100k-$135k for executive-level roles at large and multisite churches |
| Background | A bachelor's degree plus five or more years of management experience, with faith alignment and church membership |
| Church size | Small churches spread the work across a pastor, part-time staff, and volunteers; full-time directors appear as staff grows |

## What does a church operations director do all week?

The church operations director owns everything a congregation needs to function that isn't preaching or pastoral care. Job descriptions from churches of different sizes and traditions describe the same four buckets of work, weighted differently depending on the church.

Many churches trace the job back to Acts 6, where the apostles appointed seven men to oversee the daily food distribution so they could give their attention to prayer and the ministry of the word. A large Presbyterian church in South Carolina put the modern version plainly in its 2026 posting: the role exists "to remove administrative burden from pastoral staff."

### Finance and giving

Finance appears in all four church postings cited here. A director builds and monitors the annual budget, sends monthly budget reports to ministry leaders so each department knows where it stands, makes sure quarterly giving statements go out, and works with a bookkeeper or an outside accounting firm. At [Idlewild Presbyterian Church in Memphis](https://idlewildchurch.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Director-of-Operations-Job-Description.pdf), the posting has no direct accounting duties attached, yet it still expects the director to understand monthly reporting, reconciling, banking, payroll, and 403(b) transfers well enough to oversee them.

### Buildings, safety, and risk

Church buildings host far more than Sunday services, from weddings and funerals to recovery groups and community meetings. Operations directors handle maintenance and custodial staff, bids and contracts for improvement projects, facility-use requests, door locks and security cameras, alarm response, and insurance for both people and property. Larger churches add campus safety plans and long-range capital projects.

### HR and staff systems

Staff care and compliance take up a steady share of the week. Directors keep the employee handbook current, write job descriptions, run annual reviews, manage pay scales and benefits, and keep personnel records in order. Some mid-size churches pair the director with an outside HR firm, as Idlewild does, while large churches hire a dedicated HR manager who reports to the director.

### Technology, calendars, and Sundays

The church management database, accounting software, shared calendars, and staff email accounts often fall to operations by default. In a young or portable church the job reaches into Sunday morning too. [New City Church's operations director posting](https://www.acts29.com/wp-content/uploads/job-manager-uploads/job_description_upload/2025/09/Operations-Director-1.pdf) on the Acts 29 network includes scheduling setup and teardown teams, stocking first-time guest gifts, and maintaining the box truck that hauls the church's equipment each week.

## How does church size change the job?

[Church size decides whether the role exists](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/church-staffing) at all, and what it looks like when it does. Half of U.S. congregations had 65 or fewer people at weekend worship in 2020, the Hartford Institute for Religion Research found in its [Faith Communities Today survey](https://faithcommunitiestoday.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Faith-Communities-Today-2020-Summary-Report.pdf). Published postings show the work changing as churches grow.

| **Church setting** | **What the operations job looks like** |
|---|---|
| Small congregation | No director. The pastor, a part-time administrator, a volunteer treasurer, and trustees split the work |
| Church plant or portable church | A hands-on director who runs Sunday logistics, volunteers, guest follow-up, and the budget with a bookkeeper (New City Church) |
| Established church of about 1,150 members | A director supervising finance, kitchen, custodial, and maintenance staff and serving as liaison to the budget, property, and technology committees (Idlewild Presbyterian) |
| Large church with a K-8 school, about 1,700 members | An executive operations director over an HR manager, accountant, facilities managers, and IT for both church and school (Mitchell Road Presbyterian) |
| Multisite church | An executive director or pastor of ministry operations over finance, HR, administration, and operations at every campus (Chapelstreet Church) |

The skill set shifts as you move down that table.

At a church plant, the director is part event planner and part volunteer coordinator. At a large church, the job looks like a nonprofit chief operating officer's, with direct reports, audits, and long-range planning.

## How much do church operations directors earn?

[Church operations pay](https://www.christianjobslist.com/salaries/operations) ranges widely because the title covers everything from a part-time coordinator at a young church to an executive running a campus with a school. Our listings give you the broad market, and individual church postings show what the director-level job pays at specific congregations.

### What our listings show

Our data pools every listing on the board in each category, so churches sit alongside Christian schools, ministries, nonprofits, and health systems. Each listing counts at the midpoint of its published range; the table shows the median and the middle half of those midpoints.

| **Category on our board** | **Median (listings with complete ranges)** | **Typical range** |
|---|---|---|
| Operations | About $63k (1,216) | $44k-$95k |
| Administration | About $50k (602) | $42k-$66k |
| Finance | About $70k (185) | $53k-$96k |
| Human resources | About $86k (85) | $60k-$121k |
| Facilities | About $42k (121) | $34k-$56k |

Read the operations row as the broad market a church operations director works in, and the administration row as the closer match for church administrator and office manager jobs. The facilities row shows roughly what the custodial and maintenance staff a director supervises are paid. Our listings include part-time jobs, and we convert their hourly pay into a full-year figure, so a part-time office role is counted at its full-time pay, which is more than the person in it earns. You can compare more categories on the [ChristianJobsList salary data page](https://www.christianjobslist.com/salaries).

### What churches publish in their own postings

Individual church postings from 2025 and 2026 give a sharper picture of the director-level job:

- Idlewild Presbyterian Church in Memphis, with about 1,150 members, two pastors, and 12 full-time and six part-time staff, offered $68,000 to $78,000 plus benefits for a 40-hour director of operations role.
- [Chapelstreet Church](https://chapelstreet.church/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/JD-Executive-Pastor-Director-of-Ministry-Operations-6.26.pdf), a multisite church, listed $100,000 to $120,000 for its executive director or pastor of ministry operations.
- [Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church](https://www.mitchellroad.org/_files/ugd/78a2d4_4652184aa2824db1b9bc6e5ca5c26c7e.pdf) in South Carolina, with about 1,700 members and a K-8 academy, listed $115,000 to $135,000 and asked for 10 or more years of operations and finance leadership.

Pay varies by region and budget, so treat these as reference points. Across these postings, each step up in pay comes with more direct reports and, often, a school or extra campuses.

### How church pay compares with the wider market

Church-specific roles can sit below cross-sector medians, especially at mid-size churches. The [Bureau of Labor Statistics](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/management/top-executives.htm) reports a median of $105,770 for general and operations managers across all industries as of May 2025, and [administrative services managers and facilities managers](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/management/administrative-services-managers.htm) earned medians of $114,130 and $106,660. Idlewild's entire published range sits below all three.

Only the largest churches in the sample, with schools or several campuses, reach that level.

If you're moving from a corporate operations job, expect a pay cut at many mid-size churches and budget for it before you apply. Widen the search to operations roles at Christian schools and faith-based nonprofits too, since the same skills transfer and the pay varies by employer.

## How is the job different from an executive pastor?

[An executive pastor](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/executive-pastor-job-description) and an operations director often share an org chart. Church leadership writer Dan Reiland [separates the church business administrator from the executive pastor](https://churchleaders.com/pastors/pastor-articles/311462-needs-executive-pastor-anyway-dan-reiland.html): the administrator covers finances, buildings and grounds, technology, office management, and some HR, while the executive pastor acts as a coach for ministry staff and leadership.

Mitchell Road's structure shows both seats filled. Its executive operations director reports to the executive pastor and oversees the business functions, while pastors lead ministry. At Chapelstreet, the title is "Executive Director/Pastor," which leaves room for either a business leader or an ordained one. When a posting blends the two titles, ask in the first interview how much of the week goes to ministry and how much to the business office.

## What background do churches look for?

Church operations postings ask for a mix of management experience and spiritual fit. The skills side looks familiar to anyone from business or nonprofit administration:

- A bachelor's degree, required at Mitchell Road and Chapelstreet and preferred at Idlewild, with an MBA, CPA, or business-related graduate degree a plus at larger churches.
- Five or more years of management experience, the common floor, with Mitchell Road asking for 10 or more.
- Hands-on supervision of employees, plus enough HR knowledge to apply employment law correctly.
- Comfort reading financial statements, building a budget, and working with auditors or an outside accounting firm.
- Experience with accounting software and church databases.

The faith side is [where church jobs differ](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/working-at-a-church) from other operations work. Every posting reviewed here asks for a personal faith in Christ, and most expect you to join the church, either at hire or within a set period. New City Church asks staff to pursue membership within 90 days and to tell a supervisor if they can no longer affirm the church's beliefs.

A credential can help if you're already in church work. The Church Network's [Certified Church Administrator program](https://thechurchnetwork.com/certify) has candidates complete core modules with a cohort and submit a project and paper, and it expects three years of experience by the time you finish.

## How do you move into church operations from another career?

Many church operations directors build their skills outside the church first, and the paths that transfer best are the ones where you already ran budgets or managed people. Strong starting points include:

1. A business office or operations job at a Christian school, where you've handled tuition, facilities, and staff files.
2. Nonprofit administration, especially roles with grant reporting or board committee work.
3. Facilities or property management, paired with a course in nonprofit accounting.
4. Bookkeeping or HR at a small business, where you've worn several hats at once.
5. A [church administrator or office manager role](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/church-secretary-job-description), which can lead to a director seat at the same church.

Search under several titles, because churches name this job differently: director of operations, operations director, church administrator, business administrator, and director of parish operations all describe overlapping work. The [Christian operations jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-operations-jobs) and [Christian administration jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-administration-jobs) categories on our board list these openings, and [Christian facilities jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-facilities-jobs) is a practical way into a church staff if you're coming from the trades.

In the interview, show the church a system you built: a budget report a ministry leader could read, a facility-use process that ended double bookings, or an onboarding checklist that cut a new hire's first week of confusion. Pastors hiring for this seat are looking for someone who will take work off their plate, and proof of past systems tells them more than a list of skills.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is a church administrator the same as an operations director?

The two titles overlap, and some churches use them interchangeably. A church administrator usually manages the office, records, scheduling, and day-to-day support. An operations director typically holds a director-level seat with authority over finance, facilities, and personnel. Directors often supervise other staff and work directly with the lead pastor or church board on budgets and policy.

### Do you need a degree to be a church operations director?

Three of the four church postings we reviewed require or prefer a bachelor's degree, and the largest also prefers an MBA, CPA, or business graduate degree. Experience counts heavily, with five or more years of management common for mid-size churches. Smaller churches may weigh proven church or nonprofit administration experience above a specific degree.

### Can a church operations director work part time?

Yes. Smaller churches and church plants sometimes hire part-time operations staff, often under titles like operations coordinator or church administrator. Those part-time jobs tend to center on finances and scheduling. Full-time director roles usually appear once a church has several employees to supervise or a school to manage.

### Does a church operations director have to be a pastor?

No. None of the four church postings cited here requires ordination. They hire for business and management skills, though each asks for personal faith and most expect church membership. Some churches title the role "executive pastor" or "director/pastor." A housing allowance generally applies only to ministerial roles, as [IRS Publication 517](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p517) explains, so ask how the church classifies the job.

## Ask for the org chart before you talk salary

Two churches can post the same title and offer very different jobs. One expects you to run Sunday setup and teardown out of a box truck. Another hands you an HR manager and a slate of capital projects. Before the salary conversation, ask the church for its staff chart, its annual budget, and the number of buildings you would oversee, and measure the offer against the scope of the job you would be doing.

Church operations director: what they do and how much they earn

*Last updated October 2026*

Working from home takes away the commute, and the commute was doing a job nobody listed in your job description. The drive in gave you a few minutes to pray or plan before the first meeting. The drive home shut the office door behind you. Without either one, the laptop on the kitchen table can stay open past dinner, and Monday can begin with email in bed.

**A faith-based home office routine for Christian remote work rests on six anchors: a fixed start that replaces the commute, set prayer times, a workspace you can close off, a shutdown ritual, weekly in-person fellowship, and a Sabbath with work devices put away.**

## Key takeaways

| **Routine anchor** | **What it looks like at home** |
|---|---|
| Fixed start | A set time, dressed for work, with a short walk or prayer before the laptop opens |
| Prayer points | Morning, noon, and end of day, tied to cues already on your calendar |
| Workspace boundary | One spot used only for work, closed or covered when the day ends |
| Shutdown ritual | Write tomorrow's first task, pray over what's unfinished, close every work tab |
| Community | At least one in-person commitment each week outside your home |
| Sabbath | One 24-hour period with work email and chat signed out on your phone |

## Replace the commute with a fixed start

Every faith-based home office routine needs a beginning you can point to, because nothing outside your house will provide one. [Pick a start time and keep it](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/punctuality-in-the-workplace) on the days nobody would notice if you slid. Consistency counts for more than the hour you choose. A medical coder who logs on at 7:00 and a virtual school teacher whose first class is at 8:30 both need the same thing, a moment when home becomes work.

Jesus kept a start of his own. Before the crowds found him in Capernaum, he went somewhere alone:

> "And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed." (Mark 1:35, KJV)

Build your start from three or four small actions you can repeat without thinking:

- Get dressed in clothes you wouldn't sleep in, even if the camera only sees your shirt.
- Take a short walk around the block as a stand-in commute, and pray on the way back.
- Read a single passage of Scripture before you open email, so the inbox doesn't set the tone.
- Write the one task that would make today a good day on a sticky note and put it where you'll see it.

## How can you pray at set times during a remote workday?

Fixed-hour prayer is one of the oldest Christian habits, and it fits a home office better than a cubicle. David described a rhythm of prayer three times a day, and Daniel kept the same pattern in Babylon with his windows open toward Jerusalem (Daniel 6:10).

> "Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice." (Psalm 55:17, KJV)

Keep the prayers short, and tie each one to something that already happens every day so it's hard to skip:

- Before you open email or your first patient chart, [ask God for focus and patience](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/prayer-before-work).
- In the seconds before a video call connects, pray for the people about to appear on screen.
- At lunch, step away from the desk and pray the Lord's Prayer, or use a set form such as the noonday prayers in the Book of Common Prayer.
- At shutdown, hand over whatever is unfinished.

You can say a short prayer like this one before a hard call:

> Lord, You know what this conversation is going to ask of me. Give me a calm voice, a fair mind, and kindness toward the person on the other side of the screen. Amen.

If you share a calendar with coworkers, put a private 10-minute block at noon and label it "Hold." Nobody needs to know what it's for, and it keeps the slot from filling with meetings.

## Give your workspace a door, even if it's a corner

A defined workspace tells your brain and your household when you're working. A spare room with a door is ideal. In a small apartment, a corner of the bedroom works if you can close a laptop, slide a basket over the keyboard, or turn the chair to face the wall when the day is done.

Requirements shift by industry, so check what your employer expects before you set up:

- A telehealth nurse or a counselor seeing clients by video needs a room with a closing door so nobody in the house overhears patient or client information. If you're applying for remote [Christian healthcare jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-healthcare-jobs), check the posting for privacy requirements.
- An online teacher needs a plain background, steady light on the face, and a quiet hour during every scheduled class. For remote [Christian education jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-education-jobs), check the posting for how much live teaching time each day involves.
- A support or call-center rep needs a headset and a room without a barking dog. Before applying for remote [Christian customer service jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-customer-support-jobs), check the posting for internet speed and workspace requirements.
- A bookkeeper or ministry administrator mostly needs a door that discourages interruptions during deep work.

## How do you work with integrity when no one is watching?

Remote work removes the manager who walks past your desk. [Integrity becomes a choice](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/how-to-be-a-christian-at-work) you make each morning, with nobody checking. Paul told the believers in Colossae to work for a different audience:

> "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;" (Colossians 3:23, KJV)

Integrity at home runs in two directions. You give your employer focused hours, and you also stop working when the hours end. A few practices help with both:

- Keep your status light accurate. Mark yourself away when you step out, even for a school pickup.
- Block focus time on the shared calendar so coworkers know when you're heads-down.
- If you're paid hourly, answering messages after you clock out is still work. Log it or leave it for the morning.

## Close the workday with a shutdown ritual

A shutdown ritual is a short, repeatable set of actions that ends work as clearly as walking out to the parking lot used to. Without one, work stretches into the evening a few minutes at a time.

Try a version of this, in this order:

1. Write down tomorrow's first task so you don't carry it in your head all night.
2. Reply to anything that can't wait until morning, then close email and chat.
3. Pray over the work you didn't finish and the people you talked with.
4. Close the laptop and put it away, or shut the door to the room.
5. Do something physical that signals home: change clothes, walk the dog, start dinner.

Scripture is blunt about [long hours driven by worry](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/bible-verses-about-anxiety):

> "It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep." (Psalm 127:2, KJV)

Tell your household what your hours are. A spouse or a teenager who knows you're done at 5:30 can hold you to it, and kids who know you start at 8:00 learn when to ask for help with homework.

## What helps with loneliness when you work from home?

Loneliness is a known cost of remote work. Gallup found that 25% of fully remote employees reported feeling lonely, compared with 16% of employees who work fully on-site, in its [State of the Global Workplace research](https://www.gallup.com/workplace/645566/employees-worldwide-feel-lonely.aspx) (as of June 2024).

> "For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up." (Ecclesiastes 4:10, KJV)

Video calls help with tasks, but they rarely replace a face across a table. Put at least one in-person commitment on your calendar every week and treat it like a meeting with your boss:

- Join a midweek small group or Bible study, and pick one that meets in person.
- Ask your church whether you can work from its building one day a week. Some congregations have a quiet room or a lobby that sits empty on weekdays.
- Schedule a standing lunch with another Christian who works remotely in your area.
- Volunteer for a two-hour weekday slot at a food pantry, a crisis pregnancy center, or a school.
- Agree with one friend to swap prayer requests by text on Monday and check in on Friday.

Hebrews 10:25 warns against "forsaking the assembling of ourselves together," and for a remote worker, Sunday worship may be the largest group of people you see all week.

## How do you keep a Sabbath when the office is in your house?

A Sabbath is harder to keep when your work sits in the next room and pings your phone. The command assumes work has an end:

> "Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:" (Exodus 20:9, KJV)

Jesus added that "the sabbath was made for man" (Mark 2:27). For remote workers, guarding that gift comes down to logistics:

- Sign out of work email, Slack, or Teams on your phone the night before. Signing back in takes a minute, and the friction helps.
- Put the laptop in a closet or drawer for the full day.
- Pick a day that fits your schedule. Church staff, hospital nurses, and anyone who works Sundays can set aside Monday or Saturday instead.
- Tell your team which day you're unreachable, and set an away message if your role involves clients.

If your manager expects weekend availability, ask early in the job about how on-call coverage works. In the U.S., the [EEOC](https://www.eeoc.gov/religious-discrimination) says employers with 15 or more employees must reasonably accommodate religious practices, which can include flexible scheduling, unless it causes undue hardship.

## What does a faith-based remote workday look like hour by hour?

A sample day helps you see how the anchors fit together. Shift every time to match your own hours: a telehealth nurse on a 12-hour shift or a support rep covering West Coast time will move these blocks, but the order holds.

| **Time** | **What you do** |
|---|---|
| 6:30 a.m. | Coffee, a passage of Scripture, and prayer before anyone else is up |
| 7:45 a.m. | Dress for work and take a 10-minute walk as your commute |
| 8:00 a.m. | Open the laptop, pray for focus, and start the day's main task |
| 12:00 p.m. | Step away from the desk, eat lunch, and pray at noon |
| 1:00 p.m. | Meetings, calls, and collaboration time |
| 5:00 p.m. | Shutdown ritual: tomorrow's first task, prayer, laptop away |
| Evening | Family, church, or small group with work devices out of reach |

## What habits wear down a home office routine?

Good routines tend to erode through small habits that seem harmless in the moment:

- Checking email in bed, which lets the inbox decide your mood before you've prayed.
- Working from the couch or the bed, which blurs rest and work in the same spot.
- Skipping lunch to "get ahead," then losing focus by 3 p.m.
- Saying yes to every evening meeting across time zones without setting limits.
- Letting a week pass without seeing another adult outside your home.
- Reading Scripture only on the days work feels slow.

When one of these creeps in, fix the anchor it broke. If you're checking email in bed, the start ritual needs work. If you're answering messages at 9 p.m., the shutdown ritual does.

## How many Christian jobs are remote?

Remote roles are a small slice of the jobs posted on our board. According to ChristianJobsList.com listing data (as of October 2026), 1,109 of the 20,564 jobs posted on the board over the past year were remote, about 5%. The other 95% were on-site or hybrid.

That number shapes how you should think about Christian remote work. With 19 of every 20 roles on our listings on-site or hybrid, the routine above also fits hybrid schedules and occasional days at home: a teacher's planning day or an administrator's work-from-home Friday. If you're hunting for [a fully remote role](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-remote-jobs), expect a smaller pool of openings and look at categories where the work can be done from a desk, such as [Christian administration jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-administration-jobs).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a good prayer for working from home?

A good prayer for working from home is short enough to repeat every morning. Try: "Lord, this desk is Yours today. Help me work well when nobody is watching, treat every person on my calls with kindness, and stop when the work is done. Amen." Saying it before you open email sets the tone for the whole day.

### What is a good daily routine for a Christian?

A good daily routine for a Christian includes time in Scripture, prayer at set points, focused work, rest, and time with other believers. For remote workers, that means a fixed start with prayer, a noon pause, a clear shutdown at the end of work, and at least one in-person gathering during the week.

### How do you keep the Sabbath in modern times?

Keeping the Sabbath in modern times usually means choosing one 24-hour period each week and removing work from it on purpose. Sign out of work apps on your phone, put the laptop away, and plan worship, rest, and time with people. If you work Sundays, pick another day and guard it the same way.

### Can you be fired for not working on the Sabbath?

In the U.S., employers with 15 or more employees must reasonably accommodate an employee's religious practices, including Sabbath observance, unless the accommodation would cause undue hardship. The Supreme Court's 2023 Groff v. DeJoy decision raised that bar to a substantial burden on the business. Ask for an accommodation in writing and keep records.

### What are the best Christian companies to work for remotely?

The best Christian employers for remote work publish salary ranges, state their remote policy plainly, and describe how teams stay connected. Remote roles are about 5% of what our listings show, so filter by remote, read each posting's location rules, and ask in interviews how often the team meets in person.

## Set tomorrow's start time before you log off tonight

The easiest place to start building a faith-based home office routine is the first anchor. Before you close the laptop today, decide what time you'll start tomorrow, what you'll read before you open email, and where you'll walk for your stand-in commute. Write all three on a sticky note and put it on the closed laptop lid, so it's the first thing you see in the morning.

Christian remote work: building a faith-based home office routine

The posting asks for a few hours a week. Further down, the details list Sunday mornings, a Wednesday night program, and "occasional events," with pay described as "competitive" and benefits left out entirely. Part-time work in ministry or at a Christian school can fit around family life or a second job, as long as you read those details closely before you say yes.

**Part-time Christian jobs are hourly or reduced-schedule roles at churches, ministries, Christian schools, faith-based hospitals, and nonprofits, including church office help, bookkeepers, custodians, school food service, tutors, and per diem nurses. According to ChristianJobsList.com listing data (as of October 2026), about one in six Christian job listings is part time.**

## Key takeaways

| **Part-time reality** | **What to plan for** |
| --- | --- |
| 3,519 of 20,564 listings on our board in the past year were part time, plus 643 per diem | Filter by employment type early so flexible openings surface first |
| Our salary figures convert hourly pay to a 2,080-hour year | A $41k food service median (n=129) works out to about $19.50 an hour, or roughly $15,000 a year at 15 hours a week |
| Federal health coverage rules start at 30 hours a week | Below 30 hours, or at an employer with fewer than 50 full-time staff, health insurance is the employer's choice |
| 501(c)(3) employers are exempt from federal unemployment tax | Check whether your state covers the job before you count on unemployment benefits |
| Sundays and evenings come with many church roles | Get the weekly schedule, and which of those hours are paid, in writing |

## How common are part-time roles at Christian employers?

Part-time work makes up a large slice of Christian hiring. Across the 20,564 listings posted on ChristianJobsList.com in the past year, 3,519 were labeled part time, about 17%. Another 643 were per diem, 508 temporary, 383 contract, and 336 internships. Full-time roles still lead with 12,568 listings.

Some listings carry no employment type at all, so treat those counts as a minimum for flexible work.

Church size explains part of the pattern. The 2020 Faith Communities Today study found that 65% of U.S. churches average fewer than 100 people in worship, up from 49% in 2010, [as reported by Religion Unplugged](https://religionunplugged.com/news/2021/12/14/part-time-preaching-many-churches-cant-fully-support-their-ministers-anymore) (December 2021). Research cited in the same report puts the attendance needed to support one full-time minister at about 130. A congregation of 80 that wants a children's director, a pianist, a bookkeeper, and someone to clean on Saturdays often builds those jobs out of a few hours each.

Larger employers hire part time for different reasons. Christian schools need lunch coverage and after-school care for a few hours a day. Faith-based hospital systems keep per diem pools to fill holes in the staffing schedule.

## Which part-time roles do churches, schools, and ministries hire for?

Part-time faith-based roles cluster in a handful of settings, and each setting has its own schedule pattern. Knowing the pattern tells you more about fit than the job title does.

### Churches: worship, children's ministry, and the office

Churches hire part-time pianists, organists, worship leaders, sound and livestream technicians, nursery workers, children's and youth ministry coordinators, office assistants, bookkeepers, and custodians. Anything tied to services means weekend hours. Office and bookkeeping roles are the exception, and they often run on fixed weekday mornings, which suits parents whose kids are in school.

### Christian schools: tutoring, aides, and food service

Christian schools and academies hire tutors, instructional aides, substitute teachers, coaches, after-school care staff, and cafeteria workers. Hours follow the bell schedule and the academic calendar, so summer weeks may be unpaid. Browse [Christian education jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-education-jobs) for classroom and tutoring roles, and [Christian food service jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-food-service-jobs) for kitchen and cafeteria openings, where some shifts run only a few hours around lunch.

### Hospitals and care settings: per diem chaplaincy and clinical shifts

Faith-based hospital systems use [per diem chaplains](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/chaplain-jobs) to cover overnight and weekend shifts. Per diem means you sit on a call list and pick up shifts as they're offered, with no guaranteed hours. Hospitals usually ask chaplains for clinical pastoral education (CPE) units and an endorsement from a faith group, so these shifts suit seminary graduates and pastors who already have that training.

AdventHealth posted more listings on our board in the past year than any other employer (8,344). Per diem nursing roles appear among [Christian healthcare jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-healthcare-jobs) alongside full-time openings.

### Ministries and nonprofits: programs, outreach, and retail

Rescue missions, pregnancy resource centers, food banks, ministry thrift stores, and youth outreach groups hire part-time program aides, drivers, intake staff, and weekend store clerks. Youth outreach work centers on after-school and evening hours, which makes it a common fit for college students. For program aide and intake roles, look through [Christian nonprofit jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-nonprofit-jobs).

### Camps and seasonal ministry

[Christian camps hire counselors](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/christian-camp-jobs), kitchen staff, and lifeguards, mostly for summer. Camp pay runs low: our camp category shows a median of about $34k annualized across the 21 listings that published a complete range, with a typical range of $27k to $42k.

## What does part-time faith-based work pay?

Part-time pay looks smaller once you account for how salary data is built. Our own figures annualize: each listing contributes the midpoint of its published range, and hourly rates are converted to a yearly number at 2,080 hours, a full-time year. A category full of hourly jobs therefore reads like a full-time salary.

Our salary data shows these annualized figures for categories that include many of the part-time roles above. Each median covers every listing in the category, full and part time, because our data has no part-time-only pay figure:

| **Category** | **Annualized median (listings with pay)** | **Typical range** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Facilities | $42k (n=121) | $34k to $56k |
| Food service | $41k (n=129) | $28k to $46k |
| Childcare | $41k (n=11) | $31k to $47k |
| Children's ministry | $40k (n=63) | $31k to $50k |
| Chaplain | $38k (n=43) | $34k to $56k |
| Youth ministry | $38k (n=65) | $36k to $50k |
| Worship | $67k (n=18) | $52k to $75k |

To turn an annualized figure into a paycheck, divide by 2,080 and multiply by your weekly hours and weeks worked. The $41k food service median comes to about $19.50 an hour. At 15 hours a week for 52 weeks, that's roughly $15,000 a year before taxes; at 20 hours, about $20,000.

A school-year job that stops for summer lands lower still.

Worship is the outlier in the table. Only 18 worship listings published a complete range, and the data can't tell us how many were full-time worship pastor jobs. A Sunday-only keyboard role will pay a small fraction of $67k, so ask for the hourly or per-service rate and whether rehearsal time is included.

Many postings won't tell you the pay at all. Only 54% of the 20,564 listings on our board in the past year included a wage or salary figure. Before you name a number in an interview, check the [salary figures by job category](https://www.christianjobslist.com/salaries) for the kind of role you want.

## Do part-time church jobs come with benefits?

Benefits for part-time church and ministry staff vary more than pay does. Health insurance is the biggest gap, and unemployment coverage is the one people discover too late.

The Affordable Care Act defines a full-time employee as someone who averages at least 30 hours of service a week or 130 hours a month, [according to the IRS](https://www.irs.gov/affordable-care-act/employers/identifying-full-time-employees). The penalties for not offering coverage apply only to [applicable large employers](https://www.irs.gov/affordable-care-act/employers/determining-if-an-employer-is-an-applicable-large-employer), those with at least 50 full-time employees, counting full-time equivalents. A church with eight staff members faces no federal penalty for leaving part-time staff uninsured. A large hospital system faces one if it fails to offer coverage to at least 95% of staff who average 30 hours or more.

Churches in many denominations enroll staff in a denominational benefit plan, and the plan's rules decide who qualifies. The Unitarian Universalist Association's church staff finance office makes that point in its [May 2023 presentation on part-time ministry](https://www.uua.org/files/2023-05/Part-Time_Employment_Matters_2023-05.pdf): eligibility for its benefit plans is set by each plan's rules, and an individual congregation can't change them.

An organization exempt under section 501(c)(3) is also exempt from the federal unemployment tax, [per the IRS](https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/exempt-organizations-what-are-employment-taxes), and that exemption can't be waived. State law decides whether a church job is covered by unemployment insurance, and some states leave church employees out. If a part-time church job is your main income, look up your state's rules before you need them.

Ask about these items too:

- Whether paid holidays and vacation are prorated for your hours
- Whether the employer contributes to a 403(b) or denominational retirement plan for part-time staff
- Whether a ministerial role carries a housing allowance designation, which the UUA notes is "unrelated to part- or full-time status"
- Whether you'll be paid as an employee or as a contractor, since the second leaves all payroll taxes to you

## How do you keep a part-time ministry job part time?

Scope creep is a common problem in part-time church work. The UUA's list of general staffing pitfalls for congregations includes jobs that expand to fill the time allotted, "and then some," along with staff expected to be available around the clock. [Part-time church staff](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/working-at-a-church) are often members of the congregation too, so the line between paid hours and volunteering blurs fast.

The same UUA guidance describes three ways congregations structure part-time ministry time: a monthly block of hours, set days on and off each week, or tracked hours reported to the board every month. Ask which model your role uses, because each one handles extra events and time off differently.

Settle these questions before you accept an offer:

1. Which hours are paid? Ask whether the Sunday service counts, plus rehearsal, setup, and staff meetings.
2. Is the role hourly or salaried? If it's salaried, ask how many hours the church expects in a typical week.
3. How many "occasional events" happen in a normal month, and in the busiest month?
4. What do they expect you to do as an unpaid member, and what belongs to the job?
5. Who approves extra hours, and are they paid or traded for time off later?
6. Is the job year-round, school-year only, or seasonal?

Write the answers into your offer letter or a short job description that both you and your supervisor sign.

## Is flexible faith-based work the right fit for you?

Flexible faith-based work suits people whose other commitments are fixed and whose income needs are covered elsewhere, at least in part. Parents often want school-hour office or classroom roles. Students and seminarians fit evening youth work and Sunday worship teams. Retirees and people with a marketplace career can pick up per diem shifts or a weekend music role, and [bivocational pastors](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/bi-vocational-ministry) often pair a small-church pulpit with a weekday job.

If you need health insurance from this job, ask for the benefit plan's eligibility threshold. Some denominational plans start well below 30 hours; the UUA's plans cover employees scheduled to work 750 or more hours a year, about 15 hours a week. Where no plan applies, target roles of 30 hours or more at larger employers.

## How do you find and land part-time Christian jobs?

Part-time Christian jobs hide behind inconsistent labels, so search with several terms: "part time," "PRN," "per diem," "hourly," "stipend," "seasonal," and "hours per week." Filter by employment type where the board allows it, and read the pay line on anything labeled volunteer; 95 listings on our board in the past year carried that label.

Put your availability in the first paragraph of [your resume or cover letter](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/ministry-resume). A line such as "available Sundays 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesdays after 4 p.m." answers the hiring team's first question before they ask it.

Christian employers often ask you to affirm their beliefs, even for a kitchen or custodial role, so read the doctrinal requirements before you apply. References from a pastor or ministry leader who has seen you serve carry weight for church roles in particular.

Some ministry workers stack two part-time jobs, for example a Sunday worship role plus a weekday school aide position. Track the total hours, and remember that at 15 hours each, neither employer counts you as full time under the federal 30-hour rule.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many hours is a part-time church job?

Part-time church jobs range from a few hours a week for a Sunday musician to around 30 hours for an office manager or ministry coordinator. Many postings list a weekly target, such as 15 or 20 hours. Ask whether services, rehearsals, and staff meetings count toward that number, since they often decide your weekly workload.

### Do part-time church employees get benefits?

Some do, but many part-time church employees get no health insurance. Federal rules treat 30 hours a week as full time, and only employers with at least 50 full-time staff face penalties for not offering coverage. Paid time off and retirement contributions depend on the church and the rules of its denominational plan.

### Can you collect unemployment after leaving a church job?

It depends on your state. Churches and other 501(c)(3) organizations are exempt from the federal unemployment tax, and some states exclude church employees from unemployment coverage. If a church job is your main paycheck, check your state's rules before you accept, and ask the employer whether it participates in state unemployment insurance.

### How much do part-time church jobs pay?

Part-time church jobs usually pay hourly or by stipend. In ChristianJobsList.com salary data, annualized medians run about $38k to $42k (roughly $18 to $20 an hour) for children's ministry, youth ministry, chaplain, food service, and facilities, each based on 43 to 129 listings with complete salary ranges. Those medians cover every listing in each category, full and part time.

## Count the Sundays before you count the hours

A part-time posting gives you an hour count, and the church calendar shows you the job. Before you apply, sketch a normal month for the role: services, rehearsals, events, staff meetings, and the weeks school is out. When that month fits your household and the hourly rate still covers what you need, send the application with your available days in its first line.

Christian jobs part-time: flexible faith-based work

The hardest line in a relocation budget for ministry work is often the deposit: first month's rent, last month's rent, and a security payment in a town where you don't know a single landlord. A handful of faith-based employers make that line disappear. They hand you a house key along with the job description, and in exchange your home and your workplace share an address, sometimes for years.

**Christian jobs with housing include summer and year-round camp staff, pastor positions with a parsonage, houseparents at children's homes, live-in staff at residential ministries, overseas missions roles, and caretakers at retreat centers. Housing is tied to the job, so you lose the home when the job ends, and cash pay is often modest.**

## Key takeaways

| Where you'd live | What the arrangement usually includes |
|---|---|
| Camp cabin or staff house | Summer staff share cabins; year-round staff may get a house or apartment on site, often with meals |
| Church parsonage | A church-owned home for the pastor's family; rental value is free of federal income tax under IRS rules |
| Children's home cottage | Houseparents live with the children they care for, usually with utilities covered and a rotating schedule |
| Residential ministry or boarding school | Live-in staff or dorm parents get on-campus quarters and are on call after hours |
| Field housing overseas | Agencies arrange or fund housing, often paid from the support you raise |
| Caretaker's residence | A house on the property in return for security, maintenance, and after-hours response |

## What counts as a "job with housing" in Christian work?

Faith-based employers offer housing in three different ways, and the differences change your taxes, your privacy, and your exit plan. Sorting an opening into one of these three before you apply saves a lot of confusion later.

1. **Required on-site housing.** You must live on the property to do the job: houseparents, camp directors, caretakers, residence staff.
2. **Housing offered as a benefit.** The employer owns a home and offers it as part of your pay, as with a church parsonage. You could do the job living elsewhere, but the house comes with the offer.
3. **Housing you fund through the role.** Many missions agencies arrange field housing, but the cost comes out of [the support you raise](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/christian-missionary-work) or a housing budget you manage.

Required on-site housing tends to be the best financial deal and the hardest to walk away from. A benefit-style home sits in the middle. Support-funded housing gives you the most say over where you live and the most paperwork.

## Which camp jobs come with housing?

[Christian camps](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/christian-camp-jobs) are a familiar entry point for people who want a job with a place to live attached. Summer counselors, lifeguards, wranglers, kitchen crews, and program staff usually live in cabins or staff lodges for the season and eat in the dining hall. Year-round roles are a different setup: program directors, guest services managers, food service leads, and maintenance staff at camps and conference centers may get a house, apartment, or RV pad on the property.

Camp pay runs on the lower end of faith-based work. According to ChristianJobsList.com listing data (as of October 2026), 21 of the 177 camp roles posted in the past year published a complete salary range, with a median of about $34k and a typical range of $27k to $42k. Across all 10,547 listings in our data with complete ranges, the median is about $62k. Our listings don't flag which camp roles include housing. Hourly camp wages are converted to a full-time annual figure, which overstates what a ten-week summer pays.

Search camp roles on the [ChristianJobsList job board](https://www.christianjobslist.com/) by keyword. Year-round kitchen and dining roles at camps also show up when you search food service openings.

Before you accept a camp role with housing, ask:

- Is the housing shared, and with how many people?
- Are meals included on days off and between camp sessions?
- Can a spouse or children live with you in a year-round staff house?
- How much notice do you get to move out if the role ends after the summer?

## How do parsonage positions work for pastors?

A parsonage is a home the church owns and provides to its pastor, usually next to or near the church building. Some churches also provide one for an associate or youth pastor. The tax treatment is specific to ministers. Under [IRS Publication 517](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p517), a minister who receives the rental value of a parsonage as part of pay can exclude that value from income for federal income tax, but not for self-employment tax. In practice, that means you still owe Social Security and Medicare on the home's fair rental value unless you have an approved exemption.

The bigger long-term issue is equity. Ten years in a parsonage can mean ten years with no ownership stake in any home, which leaves you without a home of your own when you retire or move to a church that offers [a cash housing allowance](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/housing-allowance-for-pastors) instead. Some pastors ask the board for an equity allowance, a yearly contribution set aside toward a future home, as part of the package.

Before you accept a parsonage, ask who pays utilities, who approves and pays for repairs, whether the church uses the home for meetings or guests, and how long your family can stay if you leave or pass away.

## What do houseparents at Christian children's homes do?

Houseparents live in a cottage or family-style home on a campus and raise a group of children who can't live with their own families for a season. The work covers everything a parent does: school mornings, homework, meals, discipline, church, doctor's appointments, and late-night conversations.

Published listings show what the arrangement can look like. A houseparent posting from New Mexico Baptist Children's Home, live on [JustChurchJobs](https://justchurchjobs.com/job/4395/houseparent) as of October 2026, describes caring for up to nine resident children in a large home on campus, on a schedule of 16 days on and 8 days off, with housing and utilities (including internet) provided. It lists pay of $65,000 per couple or $32,500 per individual and opens the role to married couples or single women who are active in a Southern Baptist church.

A profile of Cookson Hills on [Houseparent.com](https://www.houseparent.com/post/employer-feature-cookson-hills) says its houseparents "live in ministry-provided homes, with all housing, utilities, and food covered."

Many Christian children's homes prefer or require married couples. [Palmer Home](https://palmerhome.org/careers/houseparents/) in Hernando, Mississippi, for example, recruits only married Christian couples. Others hire single adults or pair a houseparent with relief staff who cover days off.

Houseparent roles sit close to social work and childcare, and children's homes often post case manager and family support roles alongside them. Our [Christian social work jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-social-work-jobs) page is a good place to start.

## Which residential ministries hire live-in staff?

Residential ministries serve people who need a safe place to live for a while, and many of them need staff on site around the clock. Openings for live-in or on-site staff come up at:

- Faith-based addiction recovery programs, where residence managers live in or near the program house
- Rescue missions and shelters that keep overnight staff on the property
- Maternity homes and transitional housing programs for women and families
- Christian boarding schools, where dorm parents or residence directors live in apartments inside the student residences

Boarding school dorm parent roles often pair a teaching or coaching job with campus housing. A teacher gets an apartment in the residence hall and covers evening and weekend duty in return. Look for "residential life," "dorm parent," and "resident director" in titles on our [Christian education jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-education-jobs) page.

A live-in role at a residential ministry comes with on-call hours. Ask how many nights per week you're the responder, whether you're paid for overnight duty, and whether your days off can be spent away from campus.

## How does housing work in missions and international roles?

[Overseas missions roles](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/international-christian-jobs) usually include some plan for housing, and agencies handle it in different ways. Some agencies own guesthouses or team compounds. Some give you a housing budget to rent locally. International Christian schools often include an apartment for teachers as part of the contract.

Published pay for missions work is the lowest of any category in our salary data: 21 of the 135 missions listings from the past year published a complete salary range, with a median of about $25k and a typical range of $19k to $38k. Many missions positions are funded by support raising and never post a salary, so the published figures cover only a slice of the field.

If you'll be living abroad, [IRS Publication 54](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p54) explains the foreign earned income and foreign housing exclusions that U.S. citizens working overseas may qualify for. Agencies usually have member care or finance staff who walk new workers through it.

Ask any missions agency these questions before you sign:

- Who signs the lease, and whose name is on it?
- Is the housing furnished, and is it shared with other team members?
- Does the housing budget come out of your raised support or the agency's general fund?
- Where do you live during home assignment in the United States?

## Can caretaker and facilities roles include a house?

Caretaker roles are easy to miss among Christian jobs with housing. Camps, retreat centers, conference grounds, and some larger churches hire a caretaker or property manager who lives in a house on the grounds. In return, the caretaker handles security checks, maintenance, snow removal, guest lockouts, and the 2 a.m. call when a pipe bursts.

Facilities work pays more than camp or missions roles in our salary data. Of the 452 facilities roles posted in the past year, 121 published a complete range, with a median of about $42k and a typical range of $34k to $56k. Many facilities listings are standard maintenance and custodial jobs with no housing attached, so read the benefits section carefully. Browse current openings on our [Christian facilities jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-facilities-jobs) page and search for "caretaker," "on-site," or "residence provided."

## Is employer-provided housing taxable?

For most employees who aren't ministers, the answer depends on three tests. Under [IRS Publication 15-B](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p15b), an employer can exclude the value of lodging from your wages when the lodging is on the employer's business premises, it's provided for the employer's convenience, and you must accept it as a condition of employment. A houseparent required to live in a campus cottage or a caretaker required to live on the grounds will often meet all three.

Housing that fails one of those tests, such as an off-site apartment you could choose to decline, can count as taxable wages. Ministers follow the separate parsonage rules in Publication 517. Tax treatment depends on the details of your arrangement, so check a written offer with a tax professional who works with churches and nonprofits.

## How do you compare a job with housing to one without?

Comparing a housing offer with a regular paycheck is easier with a rent-equivalent test. It turns the housing into a number you can line up against any other offer.

1. Look up what a similar home rents for in that town, and multiply by 12.
2. Add the utilities, internet, and meals the employer covers.
3. Add that total to the cash salary to get your rent-equivalent pay.
4. Subtract the costs the housing creates: on-call hours, a longer drive to family, storage for furniture you can't fit, and no equity building in a home.
5. Line the result up against other offers and against the [salary ranges by category](https://www.christianjobslist.com/salaries) published on ChristianJobsList.

A $34k camp role with a free staff house and meals can beat a $45k job that requires rent in an expensive area. A parsonage in a town with cheap rents may be worth less than a cash housing allowance that lets you buy a home. Run the numbers for your situation before deciding.

## How do you find Christian jobs with housing?

Housing is rarely listed in a job title, so searching takes some keyword work. Try these terms in job board searches and in your browser's find tool on each listing:

- "Housing provided," "housing included," and "on-site housing"
- "Live-in," "residential," and "resident director"
- "Parsonage" and "manse" for pastor roles
- "Room and board" for camp and seasonal roles
- "Houseparent," "house parent," and "cottage parent" for children's homes

Read the full benefits section, because housing often appears there and nowhere else. Christian jobs with housing also hide behind vague phrases like "campus residence" or "on-site living." The [Christian Camp and Conference Association](https://www.ccca.org/) helps people find camp jobs at its member camps, and Houseparent.com focuses on residential childcare roles. When a listing is vague, ask in your first email whether housing is provided and whether living on site is required.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a houseparent?

A houseparent is a staff member who lives with and cares for a group of children or teens in a residential setting, such as a children's home, group home, or boarding school. Houseparents handle daily routines like meals, school, homework, and discipline, and they usually live in the home rent-free as a condition of the job.

### Are there houseparent jobs for couples?

Yes. Many Christian children's homes prefer married couples, and some hire only couples. Couples usually share one home with the children and split the daily work, and pay is sometimes quoted per couple instead of per person. Ask whether both spouses are employees with their own benefits, or whether one is treated as the primary hire.

### How do you find seasonal work with housing?

Start with Christian summer camps, which commonly house seasonal staff in cabins and serve meals in a dining hall. Search for "room and board" or "housing provided" in camp listings, and apply early, since many camps fill summer rosters months ahead. Retreat centers and conference grounds also hire seasonal staff with on-site lodging.

### Are there ministry jobs for couples?

Ministry jobs for couples include houseparent roles at children's homes, camp director and host-couple positions at camps and retreat centers, dorm parent roles at Christian boarding schools, and missions assignments that send couples together. Many of these roles include on-site housing, since both spouses live where they serve.

### Do you pay taxes on housing provided by a Christian employer?

It depends on the role. Lodging on your employer's premises, provided for its convenience and required as a condition of employment, can be excluded from wages under IRS Publication 15-B. Ministers living in a parsonage exclude the rental value from income tax but still owe self-employment tax on it.

## Ask what happens to the house on your last day

Every job with housing ends with a move, whether you retire, change roles, or leave on bad terms. Before you accept, ask the employer to put in writing how many days you'll have to vacate once the job ends, and whether that window changes if your spouse is the one who leaves the role.

Christian jobs with housing: Opportunities that provide accommodation

The title "Christian counselor" can belong to a licensed therapist who bills insurance, a care pastor with a seminary degree, or a church member certified to counsel from Scripture. The three train in different ways and get hired by different employers. One major biblical counseling body even reserves the right to decline certification for state-licensed counselors. Choosing your path before you choose a school can save you years and tuition.

**Christian counseling jobs follow four main paths: licensed clinical counseling (LPC, LMFT, or LCSW) at faith-based practices and agencies, pastoral counseling on church staff, biblical counseling through certifications such as ACBC, and school or nonprofit counseling. Clinical roles require a master's degree and a state license; church roles weigh theology training, ordination, or certification.**

## Key takeaways

| **Counseling path** | **What it takes to get hired** |
|---|---|
| Licensed clinical counselor | Master's degree, supervised clinical hours, a state exam, and a license such as LPC, LMFT, or LCSW |
| Pastoral counselor on church staff | Seminary or Bible college training, often ordination, and a church that funds a care or counseling role |
| Biblical counselor | Certification such as ACBC's three phases, usually inside a church or biblical counseling center |
| School counselor | A state school counseling credential for public schools; Christian schools set their own rules |
| Nonprofit counselor or case manager | A license for therapy roles, a bachelor's degree for many case management roles |
| Pay | Median about $62k across 61 counseling listings with complete salary ranges, according to ChristianJobsList.com listing data (as of October 2026) |

## Which path into Christian counseling fits you?

Picture the workplace first, and the options sort themselves. A faith-based group practice, a church care ministry, a Christian high school, and a pregnancy resource center all hire people they call counselors, yet each one screens for a different credential. Start with where you want to sit on a Tuesday afternoon and work backward to the training.

    E --> I["License for therapy roles, bachelor's for case management"]
```
If you want to diagnose and treat conditions like depression or addiction, and you want clients to use their insurance, you need a state license, whatever the setting. Church, biblical, and school counseling roles without a clinical license allow neither.
## What does a licensed Christian counselor need?
Licensed Christian counselors hold the same state license as any other therapist. The faith part shows up in who hires them, which clients seek them out, and how they integrate prayer or Scripture when a client asks for it. The license itself comes from the state, and the steps look much the same everywhere:
1. Earn a master's degree in clinical mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, or social work. Many Christian universities offer these with faith integration built into the courses.
2. Confirm the program meets your state's licensing requirements before you enroll. A degree titled "Christian counseling" doesn't always qualify, so read the licensure disclosure on the program's site.
3. Complete supervised clinical hours after graduation. States ask for [between 2,000 and 4,000 hours](https://www.bestcolleges.com/careers/counseling/christian-counselor/), depending on the state and license type.
4. Pass the required exam, such as the NCE or NCMHCE for counselors, then apply for the full license.
5. Keep the license active with continuing education every renewal cycle.
The [Bureau of Labor Statistics](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/community-and-social-service/substance-abuse-behavioral-disorder-and-mental-health-counselors.htm) projects employment of substance abuse, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselors to grow 18 percent from 2025 to 2035, with about 50,500 openings a year. Those projections cover the whole profession, including secular employers, and they point to steady demand for anyone who finishes licensure.
The licensed path takes the longest: a bachelor's degree, then a master's, then 2,000 to 4,000 supervised hours before the exam and a full license. In exchange, it opens the most doors: Christian group practices, hospital systems, recovery centers, university counseling offices, telehealth, and private practice.
### Which license should you aim for?
Three licenses cover clinical Christian counseling jobs. The LPC or LMHC fits general individual counseling. The LMFT fits couples and family work, including the marriage counseling that brings many clients to Christian practices. The LCSW fits agency and hospital roles where you'll coordinate services as well as provide therapy. Pick the one that matches the clients you hope to serve, since switching later usually means more coursework.
## How do pastoral counseling roles work on church staff?
Pastoral counseling is care offered by a minister as part of church leadership. Job titles include care pastor, pastor of counseling, pastor of congregational care, and associate pastor of family ministries. Larger churches are more likely to fund a dedicated position; in smaller churches the senior pastor does the counseling alongside everything else.
The daily work is short-term and spiritual in focus: premarital counseling, grief care after a death, marriage conversations, hospital visits, crisis calls, and walking members through hard decisions. A good care pastor also knows when to refer. Severe depression, suicidal thoughts, abuse, and addiction call for a licensed professional, and churches that hire for these roles often ask how you would build and use a referral list.
Hiring committees usually look for:
- A Master of Divinity or a master's in pastoral care or counseling from a seminary
- [Ordination or a path to it](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/how-to-become-a-pastor) in the church's denomination or network
- Agreement with the church's doctrinal statement
- Experience in [lay ministry or chaplaincy](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/how-to-become-a-chaplain)
Pay for these roles depends on the church's budget. Our salary data for the broader ministry category, which includes many church staff positions, shows a median about $51k across 92 listings with complete salary ranges.
Some pastors also earn a state license, which lets them see clients outside the congregation and bill insurance. That combination is less common and takes longer, but it suits someone who wants a church role and a clinical career at the same time.
## What is biblical counseling, and how do you get certified?
Biblical counseling treats Scripture as sufficient for addressing the problems people bring, and it is mostly practiced inside churches and biblical counseling centers. Certification comes from private organizations. The best known is the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC).
[ACBC certification](https://biblicalcounseling.com/training/certification/) runs in three phases:
1. Learning: a fundamentals training course, counseling observations, and approved reading
2. Exams: written theology and counseling exams
3. Supervision: 50 sessions of supervised counseling with an ACBC Fellow
ACBC lists a two-year average completion time and a cost of approximately $1,400, and it notes that finishing the phases doesn't guarantee certification. Membership also requires doctrinal affirmation, a background check, and a pastoral endorsement.
If you're torn between paths, read ACBC's [statement on licensure](https://biblicalcounseling.com/about/beliefs/statements-from-the-board/licensure/) first. The board says it reserves the right not to approve licensed professional counselors for continued certification because of the ethical and moral restrictions placed on state-licensed practitioners, so holding both credentials may not be possible.
Biblical counselors can't bill insurance, so paid positions are fewer. Many serve as church staff with counseling in their job description, as volunteers in a church care ministry, or at a counseling center funded by churches and client fees. Many state counseling laws exempt clergy and church-based counseling from licensure, but the wording differs from state to state, so read your state's statute before you counsel anyone for a fee.
Other groups, including the American Association of Christian Counselors, offer their own training and credentials. Before paying for any certificate, check which credential the employers you want are listing in their job posts.
## Where are the school and nonprofit counseling jobs?
School and nonprofit settings employ many of the counselors at Christian organizations, and their openings are easy to miss if you only search for "therapist."
### Christian schools and colleges
Public school counselors need a state credential, which the [BLS describes](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/community-and-social-service/school-and-career-counselors.htm) as typically requiring a master's in school counseling, a supervised internship, and a passing test score. Private Christian schools set their own standards. Some require the same state credential, while others hire licensed counselors or experienced teachers for guidance and college advising roles. Christian colleges and universities run counseling centers that usually require a license, along with academic advising and student life roles that don't. Browse [Christian education jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-education-jobs) to see how schools word these openings.
### Faith-based nonprofits
[Christian nonprofits](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/christian-nonprofit-jobs) hire counselors in places like:
- Pregnancy resource centers, for client advocates and licensed counselors
- Rescue missions and residential recovery programs, for addiction counselors and case managers
- Foster care and adoption agencies, for family therapists and caseworkers
- Refugee resettlement and family services, for case managers and social workers
- Camps and youth ministries, for staff care and mental health support roles
Many of these jobs are filed under social work, so search that category too. [Christian social work jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-social-work-jobs) range from case management to clinical roles that an LCSW or LPC can fill.
## What counseling-related jobs can you get before you're licensed?
Pre-licensed and entry-level roles let you work in Christian counseling settings while you finish school or log supervised hours. Residential recovery programs, rescue missions, and children's homes hire behavioral health technicians, residential counselors, and resident assistants, often with a bachelor's degree or less. Pregnancy resource centers hire client advocates and intake staff, and many train volunteers for the same work.
Case management is the widest door. Faith-based family service and foster care agencies hire case managers with a bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, or a related field. You'll learn intake, crisis response, documentation, and referral, which are the same skills a supervisor watches for during your clinical hours.
After you graduate with a master's degree, look for associate-level clinical jobs. States use titles like LPC-Associate, LMFT Associate, or provisional license for counselors who are still collecting supervised hours, and job posts often say "license-eligible" or "pre-licensed welcome."
Entry-level roles in residential programs can involve overnight shifts and part-time schedules, so read the hours line in the posting before you apply.
## How much do Christian counseling jobs pay?
Across the 61 [counseling roles in our listings](https://www.christianjobslist.com/salaries/counselor) that published a complete salary range, pay typically runs $41k to $78k, with a median about $62k. Social work roles sit close by, with a median about $60k and a typical range of $42k to $73k across 121 listings. Our figures use the midpoint of each published range and annualize hourly pay at 2,080 hours, which assumes a full-time caseload, so a part-time or per-diem counselor's yearly pay will come in under the annualized figure for the same hourly rate.
| **Role or source** | **Median annual pay** |
|---|---|
| Counseling roles in our listings (N=61) | About $62k |
| Social work roles in our listings (N=121) | About $60k |
| Mental health and substance abuse counselors, [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/community-and-social-service/substance-abuse-behavioral-disorder-and-mental-health-counselors.htm), May 2025 | $59,350 |
| Marriage and family therapists, [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/community-and-social-service/marriage-and-family-therapists.htm), May 2025 | $66,940 |
| School and career counselors, [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/community-and-social-service/school-and-career-counselors.htm), May 2025 | $64,330 |
Pay varies with your license and region. A fully licensed LMFT at a hospital-affiliated practice will usually earn more than a pre-licensed associate at a small nonprofit. Our numbers describe what employers on the board advertise, which can differ from what every ministry pays. ## How do you find Christian counseling jobs?
Finding Christian counseling jobs gets easier once you know which titles to search. Many employers never put the phrase "Christian counselor" in a job title, so a narrow search misses openings.
1. Search by credential and setting. Try "clinical therapist," "LPC," "LMFT," "care pastor," "biblical counselor," "client advocate," "family therapist," and "school counselor."
2. Start with a category page. The [Christian counseling jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-counseling-jobs) page on our board gathers openings from churches, ministries, schools, and faith-based agencies in one place.
3. Look at the employer's mission and doctrine page before you apply, then mirror its language in your cover letter where your convictions agree.
4. Ask your graduate program's practicum office which faith-based sites take students. A practicum site that likes your work often turns into a first job offer.
5. Volunteer in a church care ministry or pregnancy center while you study. It gives you references who have watched you counsel under pressure.
6. Join a professional association in your lane, such as your state counseling association or ACBC, for job boards and conference contacts.
### What should you ask a faith-based counseling employer?
[Interviews for counseling roles at Christian organizations](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/ministry-interview-questions) should run both directions. Ask questions that reveal how the job works day to day:
- Do you provide clinical supervision toward full licensure, and who pays for it?
- Which insurance panels does the practice accept, or is it cash pay only?
- How do counselors handle faith integration with clients who don't share it?
- What happens when the organization's doctrinal positions and a licensing board's ethics code seem to point in different directions?
- How many client hours a week are expected, and how is pay tied to them?
New graduates should press hardest on supervision. Outside supervisors usually charge by the session, so a first job that includes free supervision can save you a large bill over the years it takes to reach full licensure.
## Frequently asked questions
### Do I need a license to be a Christian counselor?
You need a state license to practice as a clinical counselor, diagnose mental health conditions, bill insurance, or use protected titles such as LPC or LMFT. Pastors counseling their own congregations and certified biblical counselors working in churches are often exempt, so check your state's counseling law for its exact wording.
### How is a biblical counselor different from a Christian counselor?
A Christian counselor is usually a state-licensed therapist who integrates faith with clinical methods like cognitive behavioral therapy. A biblical counselor relies on Scripture as the main source for counseling, holds a private certification such as ACBC instead of a state license, and typically works inside a church or biblical counseling center without insurance billing.
### Can you be a Christian counselor without a degree?
Biblical counseling certification and many church lay counseling ministries don't require a graduate degree. ACBC certification, for example, involves training, exams, and 50 supervised sessions. Paid clinical roles are different: licensure requires a master's degree in counseling, marriage and family therapy, or social work, plus supervised hours and an exam.
### Do churches hire counselors?
Churches do hire counselors, mostly larger congregations with a budget for a care pastor, counseling pastor, or biblical counselor on staff. Some churches also run counseling centers staffed by licensed therapists who see members and the public. Smaller churches often refer members to local Christian practices instead of hiring.
### Are Christian counselors in demand?
Demand for licensed counselors overall is strong. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects mental health and substance abuse counselor jobs to grow 18 percent from 2025 to 2035. Faith-based practices and Christian schools draw from that same licensed workforce, while paid church and biblical counseling roles are fewer and tied to church budgets.
## Pick your credential before you pick a program
The most expensive mistake in this field is finishing a degree that doesn't lead to the job you wanted. Before you apply to any counseling program, print your state licensing board's education requirements and hold them next to the program's course list. If the two match and the job you want calls for a license, you're on the right track. If the job you want sits inside a church, talk to that church's pastors about the training they would trust.
Christian counseling jobs: careers and how to find them
Camp hiring runs on a calendar that surprises first-time applicants. Counselor interviews happen over Christmas break, staff training starts before some colleges finish finals, and the crew that patches cabin roofs and plans next summer's menus in February never gets a summer off. Two kinds of work share the same campground, and each asks something different of the person who takes it.
**Christian camp jobs come in two kinds. Summer staff roles (counselor, lifeguard, wrangler, kitchen crew) last about 6 to 12 weeks, include housing and meals, and pay a weekly or seasonal stipend. Year-round roles (program director, facilities, food service manager, camp director) are ongoing salaried or hourly jobs, sometimes with on-site housing.**
## Key takeaways
| **Camp role or topic** | **What Christian camps typically offer** |
|---|---|
| Summer counselor | A full season living in a cabin with campers, with room, board, and a stipend |
| Summer support staff | Kitchen, housekeeping, grounds, lifeguard, and activity roles, often open to recent high school graduates |
| Year-round staff | Program, facilities, food service, guest services, and director roles that also serve fall and spring retreat groups |
| Pay | Median about $34k across 21 camp listings with complete salary ranges, according to ChristianJobsList.com salary data (as of October 2026) |
| Hiring season | Summer recruiting runs from fall through spring; year-round roles post whenever a seat opens |
| Faith expectations | Expect to affirm a statement of faith and to talk about Jesus with campers |
*Last updated October 2026*
## How do summer staff and year-round camp jobs differ?
Summer staff and year-round staff work at the same camp on different terms. Summer staff sign on for one season, live on site for its full length, and receive a flat weekly or seasonal stipend on top of room and board. Year-round staff are ongoing employees who prepare the camp before campers arrive, run it through the summer rush, and keep it open for the retreats, school groups, and conferences that fill many camps from September to May.
| **Detail** | **Summer staff** | **Year-round staff** |
|---|---|---|
| Length | One season, plus one to two weeks of training | Ongoing, usually full time |
| Who applies | Recent high school graduates and college students | Adults with work experience, couples, and families |
| Pay model | Weekly or seasonal stipend | Annual salary or hourly wage |
| Housing | A cabin with campers or a staff lodge | On-site house or apartment at some camps, off-site at others |
| Main work | Campers, activities, meals, and grounds | Programs, guest groups, buildings, budgets, and hiring next summer's staff |
| Off-season | Back to school or another job | Retreats, rentals, maintenance, and recruiting |
A summer on staff is the cheapest way to find out whether camp ministry suits you, and a year-round job is how you make a career of it. Camps often fill year-round openings with former summer staff, since those people already know how the place runs.
## What summer staff jobs do Christian camps hire for?
Summer staff jobs at a Christian camp fall into four groups, and a large camp hires for all of them every year. [Trout Lake Camps in Minnesota](https://troutlakecamps.org/join-the-team/summer-staff), for example, lists 23 summer positions on its staff page (as of October 2026), ranging from cabin leader and lifeguard to cook, wrangler, housekeeping, grounds, and office support.
### Cabin counselor
Counselors live with a cabin of same-gender campers for a week or a session at a time. You wake them up, eat with them, lead cabin devotions and small group Bible study, take them to activities, and keep watch until lights out. It is the most demanding seat at camp and the one with the most direct ministry, since you are the adult a camper sees first and last every day. Expect long days and a short block of time off each week.
### Program and activity staff
Activity staff run the parts of camp that campers write home about: the waterfront, the climbing wall, the zip line, archery, horses, and boats. [Pine Cove](https://www.pinecove.com/summer-jobs/) in Texas lists positions such as extreme activities staff, boat driver, and wrangler alongside counselors. These jobs often require a certification before summer starts. Lifeguards need a current lifeguard certificate, and the [Bureau of Labor Statistics](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/personal-care-and-service/recreation-workers.htm) notes that some employers of recreation workers, a group that includes camp counselors, require CPR or first aid certification.
### Kitchen, housekeeping, and grounds crew
Support staff feed every camper and counselor three times a day, turn over cabins between sessions, mow fields, and fix whatever broke on Tuesday night. You spend less time leading campers, though you still live and worship with the rest of the staff. Support roles fit people who want camp life without being responsible for a cabin, and the experience carries into later work in [Christian food service jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-food-service-jobs) and facilities work.
### Specialty and leadership roles
Camps also hire for health center assistants (often nursing students or nurses), worship musicians, photographers and videographers, office staff, and leadership roles such as assistant director or unit leader. Leadership roles tend to go to returning staff and pay more.
## Which year-round roles keep a Christian camp running?
Year-round camp roles exist because many camps stay open after August as retreat and conference centers. Church weekends, school outdoor-education trips, family camps, and rental groups need the same beds and dining hall that summer campers use, so a core staff stays on all year.
### Program director or coordinator
A program director plans the summer schedule and curriculum, writes the staff manual, and hires and trains the summer team. Winter is recruiting season, which can mean visits to college campuses and Christian schools, plus applicant interviews. In the fall and spring, the same person often designs retreat programs for visiting groups.
### Facilities and maintenance
Facilities staff keep the buildings, roads, water systems, waterfront, vehicles, and ropes course safe and working. Trade skills such as plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, and small engine repair translate directly, and at a camp in the woods you may be the person who answers a frozen pipe call at 2 a.m. Across all employer types on our board, facilities roles have a median near $42k from 121 listings with complete salary ranges.
You can browse open [Christian facilities jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-facilities-jobs) at camps and other ministries if you have trade experience.
### Food service manager
A camp food service manager plans menus for groups that change size every week, orders supplies, manages dietary needs and allergies, and supervises the summer kitchen crew. Camps often ask for a food safety certification such as ServSafe. In our listings, food service roles across all employer types have a median near $41k, based on 129 postings with complete salary ranges.
### Guest services and retreat coordinator
Retreat coordinators book rental groups, handle registration and contracts, and serve as the host for a church or school while it is on site. Hospitality and event planning experience carry over well.
### Camp director or executive director
The director carries the whole operation: budgets, the board, fundraising, staff hiring, safety, and the camp's spiritual direction. Directors usually come up through program or operations roles. At a small camp, the director may also run programs and raise money.
### Internships and residencies
Some camps run year-long internships for recent college graduates, rotating them through programs, facilities, and guest services. An internship can be a bridge between summer staff and a full-time role, though pay is often closer to a stipend than a salary.
## How much do Christian camp jobs pay?
Christian camp jobs pay in two different ways, so compare them carefully. In ChristianJobsList.com salary data, 21 of 177 camp listings came with a full pay range, and across those 21, pay typically runs $27k to $42k and the median sits near $34k. You can compare [camp pay against youth ministry](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/ministry-salary-guide), education, and other categories on our [ministry salary data](https://www.christianjobslist.com/salaries) page.
We annualize hourly rates at 2,080 hours and use the midpoint of each published range. A summer stipend for a 10-week season does not translate cleanly into an annual number. With only 21 ranges behind it, the median can also shift as more camps post pay.
Summer stipends are quoted per week or per season, with housing and meals included. Three examples, as posted on camp websites as of October 2026:
- Pine Cove lists $1,250 for a six-week half summer and $2,300 for an eleven-week full summer.
- Trout Lake Camps lists pay starting at $350 a week, with increases for returning staff.
- [Heartland Christian summer camp jobs](https://www.heartlandsummercampjobs.org/christian-summer-camp-employment/traveling-christian-summer-camp-jobs), a traveling day-camp program near Kansas City, lists $225 a week for counselors and $300 a week for assistant directors.
Federal law explains why a summer stipend can come out below minimum wage. Under [Section 13(a)(3) of the Fair Labor Standards Act](https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/29/213), employees of an "organized camp, or religious or non-profit educational conference center" are exempt from federal minimum wage and overtime if the camp operates no more than seven months a year or meets a seasonal receipts test. A camp that runs retreats all year may not qualify, and state labor laws can set their own rules, so ask any camp how it calculates pay before you sign.
For a broader benchmark, the [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/personal-care-and-service/recreation-workers.htm#tab-5) reports a median of $36,560 a year ($17.58 an hour) for recreation workers as of May 2025. Camp listings in our data (median about $34k across 21 ranges) sit close to that figure.
## What housing comes with a camp job?
Summer housing is part of the job. Counselors sleep in the cabin with their campers, and other summer staff usually share dorm-style cabins with coworkers. Trout Lake describes staff housing for support roles as cabins shared with 3 to 14 colleagues, and Pine Cove notes air-conditioned cabins or host homes. Meals come from the dining hall, and many camps provide laundry. Ask what you need to bring (bedding, a fan, a lock box) and where staff go on a day off.
Year-round housing varies far more. Some camps give directors and caretakers [an on-site house or apartment](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/christian-jobs-with-housing), partly because someone needs to be on the property overnight when guest groups are in or the weather turns. Others pay a salary and expect you to live in town. Before accepting, ask the camp four questions about the housing:
- Is the housing a benefit you can decline, or a condition of the job?
- Who pays for utilities and repairs?
- Can a spouse and children live there, and are there rules for guests?
- How much notice do you get to move out if the job ends?
On-site housing has tax consequences too. The IRS lets employers exclude lodging from wages when it is on the business premises, for the employer's convenience, and a condition of employment (see [IRS Publication 15-B](https://www.irs.gov/publications/p15b)). Whether your housing meets that test is a question for the camp's payroll office and a tax preparer.
## When should you apply for camp jobs?
Hiring for summer Christian camp jobs starts earlier than many other seasonal jobs. The timeline below is a general pattern, and individual camps set their own dates.
| **Time of year** | **What happens in camp hiring** |
|---|---|
| September to November | Applications open for next summer; international staff spots can fill first (Trout Lake says spots for returning international staff fill in October and November) |
| December to February | Interviews over winter break; leadership roles get decided (Trout Lake asks leadership applicants to finish the application and interview by January 10) |
| March to April | Remaining counselor and support spots fill; book lifeguard and CPR classes |
| May to mid-June | Staff training, often one to two weeks before campers arrive |
| June to August | Camp runs; late openings sometimes appear in the kitchen and on the grounds crew |
Year-round roles do not follow the summer calendar. They post whenever a position opens, so a saved search or job alert matters more than timing.
## How do you apply for a Christian camp job?
The application for a Christian camp job is longer than a typical seasonal application because the camp is hiring someone to live with children and represent its faith. The process usually runs in six steps.
1. Pick the season and the role. Decide whether you want one summer, a full summer with leadership, or a year-round position, and check that the camp's training dates fit your school or work calendar.
2. Check the camp's doctrinal statement and lifestyle expectations before you apply. Trout Lake, for example, asks staff to have a personal relationship with Jesus, believe biblical teaching is true, and be willing to share their faith with campers.
3. Complete the online application. Expect questions about your faith story and your experience with kids, plus requests for references. A pastor or ministry leader is a common reference.
4. Interview by video or in person. [Deer Run Camps & Retreats](https://deerrun.camp/employment/) says it makes a decision within two weeks of the interview and runs a background check on those selected.
5. Finish certifications and paperwork before training. Lifeguard, CPR, first aid, and food handler certificates take time to schedule in spring.
6. Show up for all of training. Staff training covers child safety and emergency plans, and camps treat it as part of the job.
For summer roles, apply directly on camp websites or through the job board of the [Christian Camp and Conference Association](https://www.ccca.org/), which lists jobs and internships at member camps. For year-round roles, also search by skill. A facilities manager or kitchen manager role at a camp may be posted under those categories on [ChristianJobsList.com](https://www.christianjobslist.com/).
## Is a camp job a good path into ministry work?
A camp job is one of the shortest paths from [interest in ministry](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/called-to-ministry) to doing it full time. In one summer you teach the Bible to kids, lead worship or small groups, handle conflict, and work inside a Christian staff community, which gives you a clear answer about whether you want more of it. The skills carry into [youth ministry](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/youth-pastor-job-description), children's ministry, teaching, outdoor education, and hospitality.
Year-round camp work suits a different person: someone who likes hands-on work, can live where they work, and does not mind giving up most of June and July every year. If that describes you, a summer on staff at the camp you want to join is often the best interview you can give, since the directors will already know how you work.
## Frequently asked questions
### How much do camp counselors get paid per week?
Christian camp counselors usually earn a weekly stipend plus free housing and meals. Examples posted on camp websites as of October 2026 include $225 a week at Heartland, a starting rate of $350 a week at Trout Lake Camps, and $2,300 for an eleven-week summer at Pine Cove. Pay often rises for returning staff and leadership roles.
### How hard is it to become a camp counselor?
Becoming a camp counselor is open to anyone who has finished high school or a year of college, depending on the camp. Christian camps add a faith interview and a background check. No teaching degree is required, though experience with kids, CPR or first aid certification, and a lifeguard certificate make an application stronger.
### How many hours do camp counselors work per day?
At Trout Lake Camps in Minnesota, a counselor's posted day runs about 15 and a half hours. Its Monday-to-Friday summer staff schedule starts with a 7:00 a.m. cabin leader meeting and camper wake-up and ends with lights out at 10:30 p.m. Ask each camp how it schedules breaks and days off.
### Are there Christian camp jobs for couples?
Some Christian camps hire married couples, usually into year-round caretaker, host, facilities, or program roles where the household lives on site. A few camps also hire couples together for summer leadership roles. Family housing tends to be limited, so contact the camp directly and ask whether couple or family housing is available before applying.
### Can you work at a Christian camp year-round?
You can, at camps that stay open outside summer for retreats and outdoor-education programs. Those camps employ year-round staff in programs, facilities, food service, guest services, and administration. Year-round roles are salaried or hourly, sometimes include on-site housing, and often go to people who served on summer staff first.
## Match the training dates to your calendar first
Two camps with similar pay can still be a bad fit if one starts training the week of your final exams. Before you compare stipends or housing, pull up the staff training and session dates for two or three camps you like and lay them over your school or work calendar for next May through August. The camp whose dates fit is the one to apply to this winter.
Christian camp jobs: summer and year-round roles
The thought tends to show up in ordinary places: a hospital room where you sat with a friend's father, a Wednesday night youth group you agreed to help with for one semester, the drive home from a week of mission work. It keeps coming back. Before long you're reading church job postings late at night and trying to tell whether the pull is from God or from restlessness with the work you already have.
**Being called to ministry means sensing God's direction toward work that serves the church or its mission, and having that sense confirmed by others. Many traditions test it in two parts: an inner call (a lasting desire plus the character Scripture asks for) and an outer call (church leaders affirming your gifts and opening doors).**
## Key takeaways
| **Discernment question** | **Where to look for the answer** |
|---|---|
| Is the desire lasting? | Whether it survives months of unglamorous, unpaid service |
| Does your character fit the work? | The qualifications in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1, read with a mentor who knows you |
| Do other believers see it? | Your pastor, elders, and the people you've already served |
| Is it pastoring or something else? | Chaplaincy, missions, youth, children's, worship, and bivocational roles all count as ministry |
| What comes first? | A defined test assignment, set up with church leaders, before seminary or a resignation letter |
## What does it mean to be called to ministry?
Every Christian has a ministry in the broad sense. Peter wrote these words to whole congregations:
> Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. (1 Peter 4:10, NIV)
So the nurse who prays with patients, the welder who leads a men's Bible study, and the teacher who coaches after school are all ministering. When people say they feel called to ministry, though, they mean something narrower: a sense that God wants them to make serving the church or its mission their main work, as paid staff and sometimes with ordination.
Different traditions use different words for that narrower call. Baptist and other evangelical churches often speak of being "called to preach" or "called into ministry." Catholics talk about discerning a vocation, usually with a diocesan vocation director. Presbyterian and Methodist churches run formal candidacy processes. The vocabulary changes, but each of these processes asks the same two questions: does this person sense the call, and does the church recognize it?
## How do the inner call and the outer call work together?
Christian writers have described the call to ministry in two parts for centuries. The [Southern Baptist Theological Seminary's summary](https://equip.sbts.edu/article/are-you-called-to-ministry/) traces the idea through Martin Luther, Charles Spurgeon, and John Newton.
### The inner call
The inner call is the personal sense of being drawn toward the work. Spurgeon named its first sign as "an intense, all-absorbing desire for the work." Paul treats that desire as a good thing:
> Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. (1 Timothy 3:1, NIV)
The inner call also includes character. The verses that follow in 1 Timothy 3, and the parallel list in Titus 1, say little about talent and a lot about self-control, hospitality, a good reputation with outsiders, and a well-ordered home. Those lists were written for elders, and churches hiring staff often use them as a reference too.
### The outer call
The outer call is the church's confirmation. In Acts, the church at Antioch did not wait for Barnabas and Saul to announce their own mission:
> While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. (Acts 13:2-3, NIV)
Many Baptists describe the congregation's role as "calling out the called." In practice, the outer call looks like leaders who have watched you serve and say yes, a church willing to license, ordain, endorse, or hire you, and doors that open when you knock.
A call that has only one half is incomplete. A strong inner pull that no mature believer confirms needs more testing. Encouragement from others without any desire of your own may point to a volunteer role or a gift to use in your current work.
## What are the signs of a call to ministry?
No single sign proves a call, and a few of them together carry more weight than any one alone. Look for a pattern like this over time:
- The desire lasts after the novelty wears off, including through setup duty, late meetings, and people who don't say thank you.
- People seek you out for prayer, counsel, or teaching before you have a title.
- Your service bears fruit others can name, such as a small group that grew, students who kept coming back, or a family helped through a crisis.
- You keep studying Scripture and theology on your own because you want to understand it well enough to explain it.
- You're willing to accept the costs, including lower pay in many roles, evening and weekend work, and a move if the door opens elsewhere.
- Your character holds up under pressure, and the people closest to you agree.
- Leaders who know you well bring up the idea before you raise it with them.
The last sign deserves weight because you can't produce it yourself. When a pastor, an elder, or a chaplain supervisor says, unprompted, "Have you ever thought about doing this for a living?" that is the outer call starting to form.
## Which false signs get mistaken for a call?
Some feelings look like a call and turn out to be something else. None of them rules out a call, but each one deserves a second look before you act on it.
Start with frustration with your current job. A bad manager or a dead-end role can make church work look peaceful from the outside. Ministry jobs come with their own budgets, boards, and conflicts, so test whether the pull would remain if your current job improved tomorrow.
A single emotional high is another. A powerful retreat or conference can start a call, and it can also fade within weeks. Give it time and service before you treat it as settled.
Wanting a platform can pass for wanting to preach. Notice how eager you are to visit a shut-in, clean up after a potluck, or teach five fourth graders, and compare it with how eager you are to speak on a stage.
Other people's expectations can feel like God's. A parent who always pictured you as a pastor, or a church that needs a youth leader badly, can create pressure that sounds like a call. Their encouragement counts as part of the outer call only when it rests on what they've seen in you.
The belief that church work is holier than other work is the subtlest one. The Reformers taught that farmers, merchants, and parents serve God in their callings as much as priests do. If your main reason for leaving nursing or teaching is that it feels less spiritual, question that reason first.
## How do you test a call with church leaders?
Testing a call works best as a structured season with people who will tell you the truth. A practical sequence looks like this:
1. Tell your pastor or an elder what you sense, when it started, and what kind of work draws you. Ask them to be direct.
2. Ask for a defined assignment with a start and end date, such as teaching an adult class for two terms, leading a small group, preaching on a few Sunday evenings, or serving as a youth volunteer through a school year.
3. Ask the people you serve what they saw. A class member or a youth parent sees things your friends won't.
4. Meet with a mentor regularly during the assignment to talk about your character, your marriage or friendships, and how the work affects you.
5. Review the season together and decide on the next step: more training, a different kind of ministry, or a clear "not now."
Many denominations turn this into a [formal ordination process](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/how-to-become-a-pastor). United Methodist candidates work through a district committee on ordained ministry. In the Presbyterian Church (USA), people discerning ordination are enrolled as inquirers and then candidates under a presbytery committee on preparation for ministry. Catholic men discerning the priesthood usually meet with a diocesan vocation director. Many Baptist and nondenominational churches begin with the local congregation licensing someone to preach. The steps vary, but all of them involve other believers watching your life over time.
If your church is small or has no process, ask your pastor to bring in a second leader from a sister church or denominational office. A call confirmed by two or three witnesses is easier to trust.
## Where can a call to ministry lead besides the pulpit?
A call to ministry often gets narrowed to one picture, a senior pastor preaching on Sunday. Many people with a clear call never fill that role.
The pull you feel may fit better in a hospital, a mission field, a youth room, a worship team, or a school.
Pay differs across these paths. According to ChristianJobsList.com salary data (as of October 2026), general ministry roles with complete published salary ranges had a median of about $51k across 92 listings, with a typical range of $42k-$63k. The table shows how the other paths compare in our salary data. Every figure comes from posted salary ranges, and hourly pay is converted to a full-time yearly figure, so someone serving part time in any of these paths would earn less than the number shown.
| **Ministry path** | **Median pay in our salary data (listings with full salary ranges)** |
|---|---|
| General ministry staff | About $51k (92 listings), typical range $42k-$63k |
| Worship ministry | About $67k (18 listings), typical range $52k-$75k |
| Children's ministry | About $40k (63 listings), typical range $31k-$50k |
| Chaplaincy | About $38k (43 listings), typical range $34k-$56k |
| Youth ministry | About $38k (65 listings), typical range $36k-$50k |
| Missions | About $25k (21 listings), typical range $19k-$38k |
The samples behind worship and missions are small, so treat those two figures as rough. Pay for church administration, counseling, education, and other faith-based roles sits on our [salary pages by job category](https://www.christianjobslist.com/salaries).
### Chaplaincy
Chaplains bring spiritual care to hospitals, hospices, prisons, the military, and workplaces. Board certification through the [Board of Chaplaincy Certification Inc.](https://www.apchaplains.org/bcci-site/about-bcci/bcci-certification-manual/), an affiliate of the Association of Professional Chaplains, requires a graduate theological education totaling at least 72 semester credits, four units of clinical pastoral education (1,600 hours), at least 2,000 hours of chaplaincy work after the fourth unit, and current endorsement from a recognized faith group. Not every chaplain job requires [board certification](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/how-to-become-a-chaplain), so read each listing's requirements.
A single unit of clinical pastoral education is a common way to test whether bedside ministry fits you, and [many chaplains work inside hospitals](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/chaplain-jobs) and health systems.
### Missions
[Missions work](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/christian-missionary-work) ranges from church planting overseas to refugee resettlement, Bible translation, and relief work in your own city. The low missions pay in our salary data may partly reflect that many agencies ask workers to raise personal financial support, though our data can't confirm that. Ask any agency how support raising works before you apply. Many mission-minded roles also sit inside [Christian nonprofit jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-nonprofit-jobs) in program, logistics, and fundraising work.
### Youth and children's ministry
Youth and children's ministry is where many people first sense a call, often as volunteers. [Barna research from 2017](https://influencemagazine.com/practice/more-than-half-of-pastors-hear-the-call-by-age-21), reported by Influence Magazine, found that more than half of U.S. pastors sensed a call to ministry between ages 14 and 21, and more than three-quarters took part in a youth ministry as teenagers. Staff roles in this area are often part time in smaller churches, so check the hours in a listing as closely as the salary.
### Worship ministry
Worship leaders plan services, lead musicians and tech volunteers, and shape how a congregation prays and sings. Musical skill gets you an audition. Churches also look for theological judgment in song choices and the ability to lead volunteers with patience.
### Bivocational ministry
Bivocational ministry means serving a church while holding another job, and it is common. A [2025 report from the National Survey of Religious Leaders](https://thebaptistpaper.org/study-evangelical-pastors-more-likely-to-be-bivocational/) (data collected 2019-20) found that 35% of the primary leaders of U.S. congregations hold another job, including 47% of white evangelical Protestant leaders. Teachers, tradespeople, nurses, and accountants pastor small churches across the country while keeping their other work. If you sense a call but can't leave your career, bivocational ministry may be the path itself. [Teaching at a Christian school](https://www.christianjobslist.com/blog/teaching-jobs-without-certification) is one common pairing, and you can browse [Christian education jobs](https://www.christianjobslist.com/christian-education-jobs) to see what those roles ask for.
## What should you do next if you sense a call?
The best next step is usually smaller than people expect. A call to ministry rarely requires quitting your job or enrolling in seminary in the first month. Start with steps you can take inside your current life:
- Write down what you sense, when it started, and which kinds of service have given you the most life. A dated record helps you see whether the pull is growing or fading.
- Schedule one conversation with your pastor or a ministry leader you respect, and bring that record with you.
- Take on a defined serving role through your church for a full season.
- Read one serious book on calling, such as Edmund Clowney's *Called to the Ministry*, and discuss it with a mentor.
- Read ministry job descriptions to learn what churches and ministries require: degrees, ordination, years of experience, or a willingness to raise support.
- Talk about finances early with your spouse or family, since many ministry paths pay less than the work you do now.
Pastors' work histories vary widely. In a [Lifeway Research survey of 1,004 Protestant pastors](https://news.lifeway.com/2024/08/06/most-pastors-have-limited-non-ministry-work-experience/) conducted in 2023, 34% reported five years or less of non-ministry work before becoming senior pastors. At the other end, 8% worked outside ministry for more than 30 years before becoming senior pastors.
## Frequently asked questions
### How do I know if I'm called to ministry?
You can usually tell by watching for a lasting desire for the work, character that fits it, fruit others can see, and confirmation from mature believers who know you well. A strong feeling alone isn't enough. Serve in a defined role for a season, then ask your pastor and the people you served for their assessment.
### Is every Christian called to ministry?
Every Christian is called to serve others with their gifts, as 1 Peter 4:10 says, whether they work in a church, a hospital, a classroom, or a workshop. A vocational call is narrower. It is a call to make serving the church or its mission your main work, often confirmed by ordination, licensing, or endorsement.
### Can you be called to ministry later in life?
Yes. Many pastors and chaplains enter ministry after other careers. In a 2023 Lifeway Research survey of 1,004 Protestant pastors, 8% had worked outside ministry for more than 30 years before becoming senior pastors. Experience in business, healthcare, education, or the trades often makes a second-career minister more useful to a congregation.
### Do you need to go to seminary if you're called to ministry?
It depends on the role and the tradition. Board-certified chaplains need graduate theological education, and many mainline denominations expect a Master of Divinity for ordination. Many Baptist, nondenominational, and bivocational churches hire without a degree, and youth or worship roles often weigh experience more than credentials.
### What if your church doesn't confirm your call?
Ask your leaders for specific reasons and take them seriously. "Not yet" usually points to character growth or more experience. "Not this role" points you toward a different kind of ministry. If you suspect the assessment is unfair, seek a second opinion from another mature leader before you move ahead alone.
## Ask for one test assignment before you make a bigger move
Before you buy a seminary textbook or draft a resignation letter, ask your pastor for one specific assignment with an end date, such as teaching a class this winter or taking a hospital visitation shift alongside a chaplain. Agree now on when the two of you will sit down to review it, and put that date on both calendars before you leave the meeting.
